Camp Liberty<\/b>, a former United States installation,
\ncame under a heavy rocket
\nbarrage<\/a> on Sunday. It is unclear if the camp or nearby Baghdad
\nInternational Airport was the intended target<\/a>.
\nIn either case, fire<\/a>
\nhas reportedly spread to the camp, which houses several thousand members of the
\nIranian<\/b> group Mujahedeen al-Khalq<\/b> (M.E.K. or P.M.O.I.). About 40 residents were wounded<\/a>.
\nA few Iraqi civilians were also injured<\/a>
\noutside the camp, when mortars fell short of their goal.<\/p>\n

The attack comes on the heels of what is being described as inhumane
\ntreatment<\/a> towards residents there from Iraqi authorities. On June 27,
\nauthorities began turning away supply trucks under the pretext that the
\nsuppliers did not have the correct paperwork. Food, water, fuel, and other
\nnecessities are no longer being allowed into the camp. As of Saturday, July 2,
\nsewage removal trucks were also turned away, threatening the camp with
\nunhygienic conditions. These accusations come from the M.E.K.\u2019s parent
\norganization, the National Council of Resistance of Iran.<\/p>\n

The Iranian group, considered a terrorist organization by
\nsome, had been welcomed into Iraq during the Saddam Hussein administration, but
\nthey fell out of favor after the U.S. invasion that toppled Saddam. The new
\nIraqi government then wanted to deport the group back to Iran but could not as
\nthe group was given protected status under the Geneva Conventions. Frustrated
\nby this, the Iraqi government has regularly waged harassment campaigns against
\nthe group instead, including forcing them out of their former home at Camp
\nAshraf in 2012. Their domicile at Camp Liberty, was intended to be a temporary
\nmeasure, while the group awaited relocation to foreign countries.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, the focus on displaced people<\/b> has been on
\ncamps near Fallujah. However, similar conditions await refugees fleeing<\/a>
\nthe Islamic State near Mosul. The Debaga refugee camp<\/a>
\nnear Makhmour<\/b> is holding three times as many displaced as it has
\ncapacity for, and more refugees are expected.<\/p>\n

At least 135 were killed and 55 were wounded<\/b>:<\/p>\n

The Iraqi government announced the executions
\nof five people<\/a>.<\/p>\n
