Where to start with this tangled skein of media spin, mis\u00adrep\u00adres\u00adent\u00ada\u00adtion and out\u00adright hypocrisy?<\/p>\n

Last week the Sam Adams Asso\u00adci\u00adates for Integ\u00adrity in Intel\u00adli\u00adgence<\/a> presen\u00adted this year\u2019s award to Dr Tom Fin\u00adgar<\/a> at a\u00a0cere\u00admony jointly hos\u00adted by the pres\u00adti\u00adgi\u00adous Oxford Union Soci\u00adety<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dr Fin\u00adgar, cur\u00adrently a\u00a0vis\u00adit\u00ading lec\u00adturer at Oxford, had in 2007 co-ordinated the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of the US National Intel\u00adli\u00adgence Estim\u00adate \u2013 the com\u00adbined ana\u00adlysis of all 16 of America\u2019s intel\u00adli\u00adgence agen\u00adcies \u2013 which assessed that the Ira\u00adnian nuc\u00adlear weapon\u00adisa\u00adtion pro\u00adgramme had ceased in 2003. This con\u00adsidered and author\u00adit\u00adat\u00adive Estim\u00adate dir\u00adectly thwarted the 2008 US drive towards war against Iran<\/a>, and has been reaf\u00adfirmed every year since\u00a0then.<\/p>\n

By the very fact of doing his job of provid\u00ading dis\u00adpas\u00adsion\u00adate and object\u00adive assess\u00adments and res\u00adist\u00ading any pres\u00adsure to politi\u00adcise the intel\u00adli\u00adgence (\u00c3\u00a0 la Down\u00ading Street Memo<\/a>), Dr Fingar\u2019s work is out\u00adstand\u00ading and he is the win\u00adner of Sam Adams Award, 2012. This may say some\u00adthing about the par\u00adlous state of our intel\u00adli\u00adgence agen\u00adcies gen\u00ader\u00adally, but don\u2019t get me star\u00adted on\u00a0that\u2026<\/p>\n

Any\u00adway, as I\u00a0said, the award cere\u00admony was co-hosted by the Oxford Union Soci\u00adety last week, and many Sam Adams Asso\u00adci\u00adates atten\u00added, often trav\u00adel\u00adling long dis\u00adtances to do so. Former win\u00adners were asked to speak at the cere\u00admony, such as FBI Coleen Row\u00adley<\/a>, GCHQ Kath\u00ader\u00adine Gun<\/a>, NSA Thomas Drake<\/a>, and former UK Ambas\u00adsador Craig Mur\u00adray<\/a>. Other asso\u00adci\u00adates, includ\u00ading CIA Ray McGov\u00adern<\/a>, dip\u00adlo\u00admats Ann Wright<\/a> and Brady Kiesling<\/a> and myself also said a\u00a0few words. As former insiders and whis\u00adtleblowers, we recog\u00adnised the vitally import\u00adant work that Dr Fin\u00adgar had done and all spoke about the import\u00adance of integ\u00adrity in intelligence.<\/p>\n

One other pre\u00advi\u00adous win\u00adner of the Sam Adams Award was also invited to speak \u2013 Julian Assange of Wikileaks. He spoke elo\u00adquently about the need for integ\u00adrity and was gra\u00adcious in prais\u00ading<\/a> the work of Dr Fingar.<\/p>\n

All the national and inter\u00adna\u00adtional media were invited to attend what was an his\u00adtoric gath\u00ader\u00ading of inter\u00adna\u00adtional whis\u00adlteblowers and cover an award given to someone who, by doing their job with integ\u00adrity, pre\u00adven\u00adted yet fur\u00adther ruin\u00adous war and blood\u00adshed in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

Few atten\u00added, still fewer repor\u00adted on the event, and the prom\u00adised live stream\u00ading on You\u00adtube was blocked by shad\u00adowy powers at the very last minute \u2013 an irony con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading the Oxford Union is renowned as a\u00a0free speech society.<\/p>\n

But worse was to come. The next day The Guard\u00adian<\/em> news\u00adpa\u00adper, which his\u00adtor\u00adic\u00adally fell out with Wikileaks, pub\u00adlished a\u00a0myopic hit-piece about the event. No men\u00adtion of all the whis\u00adtleblowers who atten\u00added and what they said, no men\u00adtion of the award to Dr Fin\u00adgar, no men\u00adtion of the fact that his work saved the Ira\u00adnian people from need\u00adless\u00a0war.<\/p>\n

Oh no, the entire piece focused on the taw\u00addry alleg\u00ada\u00adtions eman\u00adat\u00ading from Sweden about Julian Assange\u2019s extra\u00addi\u00adtion case. Dis\u00adcount\u00ading the 450 stu\u00addents who applauded all the speeches, dis\u00adcount\u00ading all the ser\u00adi\u00adous points raised by Julian Assange dur\u00ading his present\u00ada\u00adtion, and dis\u00adcount\u00ading the speeches of all the other inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adally renowned whis\u00adtleblowers present that even\u00ading, The Guardian\u2019s<\/em> reporter, Amelia Hill, focused on the small demo out\u00adside the event and the only three attendees she could appar\u00adently find to cri\u00adti\u00adcise the fact that a\u00a0plat\u00adform, any plat\u00adform, had been given to Assange from his polit\u00adical asylum at the Ecuadorian Embassy.<\/p>\n

So this is where we arrive at the deep, really deep, hypo\u00adcrisy of the even\u00ading. Amelia Hill is, I\u2019m assum\u00ading, the same Guard\u00adian<\/em> journ\u00adal\u00adist who was threatened in 2011<\/a> with pro\u00adsec\u00adu\u00adtion under the Offi\u00adcial Secrets Act. She had allegedly been receiv\u00ading leaks from the Met\u00adro\u00adpol\u00aditan Police about the on-going invest\u00adig\u00ada\u00adtion into the News of the World<\/em> phone-hacking scandal.<\/p>\n

At the time Fleet Street was up in arms \u2013 how dare the police threaten one of their own with pro\u00adsec\u00adu\u00adtion under the OSA for expos\u00ading insti\u00adtu\u00adtional cor\u00adrup\u00adtion? Shades of the Shayler case<\/a> were used in her defence. As I\u00a0wrote at the time<\/a>, it\u2019s a\u00a0shame the UK media could not have been more con\u00adsist\u00adently robust in con\u00addemning the chilling effects<\/a> of the OSA on the free-flow of inform\u00ada\u00adtion and pro\u00adtect all the Poor Bloody Whis\u00adtleblowers, and not just come out fight\u00ading when it is one of their own being threatened. Such is the way of the\u00a0world.\u2026<\/p>\n

But really, Ms Hill \u2013 if you are indeed the same reporter who was threatened with pro\u00adsec\u00adu\u00adtion in 2011 under the OSA \u2013 exam\u00adine your conscience.<\/p>\n

How can you write a\u00a0hit-piece focus\u00ading purely on Assange \u2013 a\u00a0man who has designed a\u00a0pub\u00adlish\u00ading sys\u00adtem to pro\u00adtect poten\u00adtial whis\u00adtleblowers from pre\u00adcisely such dra\u00adconian secrecy laws as you were hyper\u00adbol\u00adic\u00adally threatened with? And how could you, at the same time, air\u00adbrush out of his\u00adtory the testi\u00admony of so many whis\u00adtleblowers gathered together, many of whom have indeed been arres\u00adted and have faced pro\u00adsec\u00adu\u00adtion under the terms of the OSA or US secrecy legislation?<\/p>\n

Have you no shame? You know how fright\u00aden\u00ading it is to be faced with such a\u00a0prosecution.<\/p>\n

Your hypo\u00adcrisy is breath-taking.<\/p>\n

The offence was com\u00adpoun\u00added when the Sam Adams Asso\u00adci\u00adates all wrote a\u00a0let\u00adter to The Guard\u00adian<\/em> to set the record straight. The ori\u00adginal let\u00adter is repro\u00adduced below, and this is what was pub\u00adlished<\/a>. Of course, The Guard\u00adian<\/em> has a\u00a0per\u00adfect right under its Terms and Con\u00addi\u00adtions to edit the let\u00adter, but I\u00a0would like every\u00adone to see how this can be used and abused.<\/p>\n

And the old media won\u00adders why it is in decline?<\/p>\n

With regard to the 24 Janu\u00adary art\u00adicle in The Guard\u00adian<\/em> entitled \u201cJulian Assange Finds No Allies and Tough Quer\u00adies in Oxford Uni\u00adver\u00adsity Talk,\u201d we ques\u00adtion whether the newspaper\u2019s reporter was actu\u00adally present at the event, since the account con\u00adtains so many false and mis\u00adlead\u00ading statements.<\/p>\n

If The Guard\u00adian<\/em> could \u201cfind no allies\u201d of Mr. Assange, it did not look very hard! They could be found among the appre\u00adci\u00adat\u00adive audi\u00adence of the packed Oxford Union Debate Hall, and \u2013 in case you missed us \u2013 in the group seated right at the front of the Hall: the Sam Adams Asso\u00adci\u00adates for Integ\u00adrity in Intelligence.<\/p>\n

Many in our group \u2013 which, you might be inter\u00adested to know co-sponsored the event with Oxford Union \u2013 had traveled con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable dis\u00adtances at our own expense to con\u00adfer the 10th annual Sam Adams award to Dr. Thomas Fin\u00adgar for his work on over\u00adsee\u00ading the 2007 National Intel\u00adli\u00adgence Estim\u00adate that revealed the lack of an Ira\u00adnian nuc\u00adlear weapon\u00adiz\u00ada\u00adtion program.<\/p>\n

Many of us spoke in turn about the need for integ\u00adrity in intel\u00adli\u00adgence, describ\u00ading the ter\u00adrible eth\u00adical dilemma that con\u00adfronts gov\u00adern\u00adment employ\u00adees who wit\u00adness illegal activ\u00adity includ\u00ading ser\u00adi\u00adous threats to pub\u00adlic safety and fraud, waste and\u00a0abuse.<\/p>\n

But none of this made it into what was sup\u00adposed to pass for a\u00a0news art\u00adicle; neither did any aspect of the accept\u00adance speech delivered by Dr. Fin\u00adgar. Also, why did The Guard\u00adian<\/em> fail to provide even one sali\u00adent quote from Mr Assange\u2019s sub\u00adstan\u00adtial twenty-minute address?<\/p>\n

By cen\u00adsor\u00ading the con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions of the Sam Adams Asso\u00adci\u00adates and the speeches by Dr. Fin\u00adgar and Mr. Assange, and by focus\u00ading exclus\u00adively on taw\u00addry and unproven alleg\u00ada\u00adtions against Mr. Assange, rather than on the import\u00adance of expos\u00ading war crimes and main\u00adtain\u00ading integ\u00adrity in intel\u00adli\u00adgence pro\u00adcesses, The Guard\u00adian<\/em> has suc\u00adceeded in dimin\u00adish\u00ading none but itself.<\/p>\n
