{"id":2467,"date":"2008-02-14T13:55:53","date_gmt":"2008-02-14T13:55:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/war-terrorism\/4-million-iraqis-struggling-for-food-un\/2467\/"},"modified":"2008-02-14T13:55:53","modified_gmt":"2008-02-14T13:55:53","slug":"4-million-iraqis-struggling-for-food-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/war-terrorism\/4-million-iraqis-struggling-for-food-un\/","title":{"rendered":"4 million Iraqis struggling for food &#8211; UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ireland.com\/newspaper\/breaking\/2008\/0212\/breaking68.htm\">The Irish Times<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Four million Iraqis are struggling to feed themselves, and 40 per cent of the country&#8217;s 27 million people have no safe water, the UN said today.<\/p>\n<p>Iraq has annual economic growth of around 7 per cent, according to UN estimates, and a national budget of \u00e2\u201a\u00ac33 billion, buoyed by oil exports of 1.6 million barrels per day.<\/p>\n<p>But insurgency and sectarian attacks have displaced more than two million people and left nearly twice as many hungry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Four million Iraqis cannot guarantee they&#8217;re going to have food on their table tomorrow,&#8221; the United Nations humanitarian co-ordinator for Iraq, David Shearer, said as he unveiled a \u00e2\u201a\u00ac182 million appeal to donor governments for 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations says the number of displaced people has roughly doubled since 2006 to nearly 2.5 million.
