Its chief financial officer recently spoke\u00a0at <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.l-3com.com%2Fmedia-center%2Fpress-releases.html%3Fpr_id%3D1757598%26amp%3Bamp%3Byear%3D2012\">Goldman Sachs,<\/a>\u00a0at what the financial titan hilariously refers to as a \u201cfireside chat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>L3 also supplies local law enforcement with its <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.insighttechnology.com%2Fabout-warrior-systems-2012\">night-vision products<\/a> and makes a license-plate recognition <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.policechiefmagazine.org%2Fmagazine%2Findex.cfm%3Ffuseaction%3Ddisplay_arch%26amp%3Barticle_id%3D2314%26amp%3Bissue_id%3D22011\">(LPR) device<\/a>, a machine with <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.alternet.org%2F5-creepy-new-ways-police-intrude-your-rights%3Fpage%3D0%252C1\">disturbing implications.<\/a> LPR can be mounted on cop cruisers or statically positioned at busy intersections and can run potentially thousands of license plates through law enforcement databases in a matter of hours. In some parts of the country LPR readers can track your location for miles. As the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fonline.wsj.com%2Farticle%2FSB10000872396390443995604578004723603576296.html\">noted<\/a>, surveillance of even \u201cmundane\u201d activities of people not accused of any crime is now \u201cthe default rather than the exception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">L3 Communications embodies the totality of the national security and surveillance state. There is only minimal distinction between its military products and police products. Its night-vision line is sold to both military and law enforcement. Its participation in the drone program is now, as far as we know, limited to countries in the Middle East and North Africa. But in the words of the <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2012%2F12%2F26%2Fopinion%2Fthe-dawning-of-domestic-drones.html%3F_r%3D0\">New York Times editorial board,<\/a>\u00a0\u201c[i]t is not a question of whether drones will appear in the skies above the United States but how soon.\u201d The NYT estimates the domestic drone market at $5 billion, likely a conservative estimate, and contractors will vie for that money in the public and private sphere. L3&#8217;s venture into airports, the border of where domestic policy meets foreign policy in the name of national security, is therefore significant both symbolically and materially.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In many ways, that is the most important story of the post-9\/11 United States: the complete evaporation of the separation of foreign and domestic polices.
