Mahony and Monsignor Thomas J. Curry, published by the\u00a0Los Angeles Times,\u00a0have provided even more insight as to how sexual- abuse accusations against priests have been covered up for years. The notes <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.latimes.com%2Fnews%2Flocal%2Fla-me-church-files-20130122%2C0%2C3114631.story\">detail<\/a>\u00a0plans by the two men to keep police from discovering that children were being molested in Los Angeles parishes, with Curry suggesting the predator priestsnot\u00a0see therapists who could then alert authorities; instead, he wanted to give priests out-of-state assignments to avoid criminal charges. Curry was the chief advisor to the Archbishop on sex-abuse cases at the time.<\/p>\n<p>One priest discussed in the released files was Msgr. Peter Garcia, who tended to abuse undocumented children because he could keep them quiet by threatening to have them deported. He went to a treatment center for pedophile clergy in New Mexico, but left the priesthood in 1989 after returning to Los Angeles and refusing to take medication to contain his sexual urges toward children. Never prosecuted, he died in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Mahony\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Flosangeles.cbslocal.com%2F2013%2F01%2F22%2Fabuse-files-show-how-la-church-leaders-shielded-priests%2F\">own notes<\/a>\u00a0indicate that, while he was disturbed by the abuse and sent priests to treatment centers, he did little to investigate the priests or discover if there were additional victims.<\/p>\n<p>J. Michael Hennigan, an attorney for the Archdiocese, told the\u00a0Times\u00a0that the Church\u2019s policy in the 1980s was to let the victim\u2019s families decide if they wanted to report the abuse to the police\u2014rather than have the Church report it as a crime\u2014and that the church is proud of the progress they\u2019ve made\u00a0since\u00a0then in taking the abuse more seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Because of a 2007 civil settlement involving more than 500 victims, files concerning at least 75 more accused abusers will become public in upcoming weeks, and more revelations of complicity by the L.A. Catholic hierarchy are expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years we have been told we were not telling the truth,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fabclocal.go.com%2Fkabc%2Fstory%3Fsection%3Dnews%2Flocal%2Flos_angeles%26amp%3Bid%3D8963130\">said Joelle Casteix<\/a>,\u00a0the Western regional director of SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We were told were trying to shame the church. But instead, what these documents show is that the children were telling the truth all along and that the children needed to be believed and it was men like Cardinal Mahony who were intentionally hurting children and hurting communities.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Abuse and cover-ups has been an unfortunate pattern for the Catholic Church, including <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fusatoday30.usatoday.com%2Fnews%2Freligion%2F2010-06-24-fraud23_ST_N.htm\">accusations<\/a>\u00a0of moving around priests who have abused minors instead of immediately defrocking them. In comparison, Sister Margaret McBride at St. Joseph\u2019s Hospital in Arizona <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.msmagazine.com%2Fspring2011%2Ftreatmentdenied.asp\">was excommunicated<\/a>\u00a0in 2009 after being on an ethics committee that voted to break hospital policy in order to give a woman suffering from severe pulmonary hypertension a life-saving abortion. The hospital cut ties with the church the next year.
