{"id":242170,"date":"2016-05-07T18:08:42","date_gmt":"2016-05-07T18:08:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/egypts-atlantis-amazing-artifacts-from-ancient-underwater-world-go-on-display-photos-videos\/"},"modified":"2016-05-07T18:08:42","modified_gmt":"2016-05-07T18:08:42","slug":"egypts-atlantis-amazing-artifacts-from-ancient-underwater-world-go-on-display-photos-videos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/egypts-atlantis-amazing-artifacts-from-ancient-underwater-world-go-on-display-photos-videos\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt&#039;s Atlantis: Amazing artifacts from ancient underwater world go on display (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.com\/files\/2016.05\/thumbnail\/572df5f0c46188c47e8b459a.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        Objects from two lost underwater cities recently discovered off the Egyptian coast are being revealed to the public in a \u201cblockbuster\u201d British Museum exhibition. <\/p>\n<div readability=\"63.01252236136\">\n<p>French underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio first discovered Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus, submerged at the mouth of the River Nile, in 2000 &#8211; over 1,000 years after they were swallowed by the Mediterranean and covered in sand.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition will feature more than 200 spectacularly preserved finds from the ancient cities, including a 5.4 meter-high (17.7 ft) granite statue of the Nile flood God, Hapy, and a 1,200-year-old statue of the Greek Goddess, Isis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/334838-confederate-civil-war-shipwreck\/\">Wrecked US Civil War steamship discovered on Atlantic floor (PHOTO)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Goddio, president of the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (which he founded in 1987), excavated over a dozen historic shipwrecks before turning his attention to uncovering Egypt\u2019s lost world &#8211; equivalent in size to that of Paris &#8211; in 1996.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"854\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SXJusQqehdc\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, Goddio\u2019s work is far from over &#8211; the 68-year-old estimates he\u2019s uncovered only 5 percent of the sunken world so far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Pompeii is a very small city. They started archaeological excavation there in the 18th century \u2013 and it is still not excavated fully.
