{"id":241611,"date":"2016-05-04T19:27:16","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T19:27:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/jewish-human-rights-watch-sues-british-councils-over-israel-boycott\/"},"modified":"2016-05-04T21:37:10","modified_gmt":"2016-05-04T21:37:10","slug":"jewish-human-rights-watch-sues-british-councils-over-israel-boycott","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/jewish-human-rights-watch-sues-british-councils-over-israel-boycott\/","title":{"rendered":"Jewish Human Rights Watch sues British councils over Israel boycott"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Jewish rights organization has taken three local councils to court, alleging discrimination over the public authorities\u2019 decision to boycott Israeli goods produced in illegal settlements in the West Bank.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Jewish Human Rights Watch (JHRW) has taken Swansea, Gwyneedd and Leicester councils to the High Court in London, alleging their boycott of Israeli goods is anti-Semitic and violates the 2010 Equality Act.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p><a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/335785-israel-boycott-foreign-office\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2016.03\/thumbnail\/56e94082c3618892258b45ed.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9\u00a0Mohamad Torokman\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A solicitor for JHRQ, Robert Festenstein, said:<em> \u201cWe would like to see the motions quashed. I don\u2019t understand why they would pass it in the first place.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI mean, they wouldn\u2019t pass a motion saying something derogatory about women, so why would they do that about Jews?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Andrew Sharland, a lawyer representing Leicester\u2019s council, which approved the boycott back in 2014, said the JHRW is trying to <em>\u201cstifle criticisms of Israel.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat this challenge really concerns is criticism of the State of Israel, and the claimant\u2019s desire to suppress it,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<p>A number of councils across the country began boycotting Israeli goods around 2009 in response to Israel\u2019s invasion of Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the government issued guidance to public authorities saying such boycotts are <em>\u201cinappropriate\u201d<\/em> unless formal legal sanctions or embargoes have been put in place by central government.<\/p>\n<p>The Cabinet Office warned that boycotts could <em>\u201cundermine good community relations, poison and polarize debate, weaken integration and fuel anti-Semitism.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The campaign group War on Want has decried the JHRW legal challenge as <em>\u201cshameful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>War on Want senior campaigner Ryvka Barnard said: <em>\u201cIt\u2019s shameful that local councils are being attacked for ensuring their policies are in line with international and UK law.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe illegal settlements are a part of the systematic abuses of international law and human rights committed by Israel against the Palestinians.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has also criticized the government\u2019s guidance on boycotts as an<em> \u201cattack on local democracy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/341828-councils-bds-court-boycott\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
