US attorneys general are going to cooperate in order to investigate whether fossil fuel companies have misled investors on climate change and global warming issues by perusing their financial interests.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have heard the scientists and we have heard what is happening to the planet,\u201d<\/em> said New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman at a briefing for reporters. \u201cEvery fossil fuel company has a responsibility to be honest with its investors.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Read more<\/p>\n It has been nearly five months since Schneiderman launched an investigation into whether ExxonMobil, the largest US gas and oil company, had misled the public and investors about the risks of climate change. His actions were followed by a similar inquiry that had been opened in California earlier this year.<\/p>\n The multi-state effort has now been joined by attorneys general from Connecticut, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia, and the US Virgin Islands along with another 11 states as a part of an unprecedented \u201cAGs United for Clean Power\u201d<\/em>\u00a0group<\/a>.<\/p>\n The \u201cfirst-of-its-kind coalition\u201d<\/em> as described by former Vice President Al Gore would be working to \u201cfight for climate progress.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n READ MORE:\u00a0Supreme Court blocks EPA Clean Power Plan, Obama vows to fight on<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n All of the joining members previously formed coalition of 25 states, cities and counties led by Schneiderman, which defended President Obama\u2019s Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s (EPA) \u201cClean Power Plan\u201d<\/em> against a legal challenge.<\/p>\n New York, Massachusetts, California and the US Virgin Islands have started investigations already.<\/p>\n “If Exxon Mobil has tried to cloud their judgment, we are determined to hold the company accountable,\u201d<\/em> Virgin Islands Attorney General Claude Earl Walker said during the Tuesday news conference in New York.<\/p>\n Attorney General Maura Healey of Massachusetts also went on to announce her state\u2019s willingness to join the effort, stressing the severity of the climate change problem.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s incredibly serious when you think about the human and economic consequences,\u201d<\/em> Healey said.<\/p>\n Fossil fuel companies that deceived must be held accountable. That’s why we too have joined in investigating Exxon.<\/p>\n \u2014 Maura Healey (@MassAGO) March 29, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n Although none of the other officials were present, aside from Healey and Walker who announced inquiries of their own, Schneiderman said, \u201cnot every investigation gets announced at the outset.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cIf there are companies, whether they\u2019re utilities, whether they\u2019re fossil fuel companies, committing fraud in an effort to maximize their short-term profits at the expense of the people we represent, we want to find out about it. We want to expose it and want to pursue them to the fullest extent of the law,\u201d<\/em> the New York attorney general said.<\/p>\n Gore, an active climate policy advocate, joined the attorneys general at the announcement, calling the coalition a \u201ckey step on the path to a sustainable, clean-energy future.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n “We cannot continue to allow the fossil fuel industry or any industry to treat our atmosphere like an open sewer or mislead the public about the impact they have on the health of our people and the health of our planet,\u201d<\/em> Gore said.<\/p>\n ExxonMobil believes the probes by state attorneys general are “politically motivated,”<\/em> said Suzanne McCarron, the company’s vice president for public and government affairs.<\/p>\n “We are actively assessing all legal options,”<\/em> she said. \u201cThe allegations repeated today are an attempt to limit free speech and are the antithesis of scientific inquiry.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Last week, the Rockefeller Family Fund said it would withdraw all of its investments from ExxonMobil as soon as possible citing \u201cmorally reprehensible conduct.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Via RT<\/a>.
