It lasted for a few seconds. It was seen for hundreds of miles. We have received a number of emails,\u201d<\/em> Network member Richard Kacerek told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses reported two large flashes of light as the meteor burned up in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt was actually two explosions from the same meteor \u2013 a smaller one and the larger one \u2013 signals that the final one has potential a fragment surviving and falling to the earth,\u201d<\/em> Kacerek told the Mirror.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers are almost certain the meteor was a piece of cosmic rock from the asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Incidents like this usually happen unseenover oceans and uninhabited landmasses, but this particular fireball was seen vividly over cities including London.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FFWZEp_nwOQ\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Kacerek said reports of green flashes are most likely genuine.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is a very highly heated rock because it passes through the atmosphere then it picks up heat and speed and depending on this the gas or light refractions can be seen as green.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/334086-mysterious-meteor-fireball-scotland\/\">READ MORE:\u00a0Mysterious &#8216;meteor&#8217; lights up Scottish sky, rumbles dramatically (VIDEO)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLots of people are reporting the green one \u2013 this is completely plausible,\u201d<\/em> Kacerek told the Mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Dr John Mason, from the British Astronomical Association, explained to the BBC that green flashes were probably caused by the meteor\u2019s magnesium composition heating up the oxygen surrounding it.<\/p>\n<p>Meteors like this are not <em>\u201cuncommon,\u201d<\/em> but the brightness of the fireball was still <em>\u201cspectacular,\u201d<\/em> Mason added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/336012-meteor-fireball-green-patricks\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
