A sixteen-year-old boy is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Addison, Texas. Police said an off-duty officer attempted to intervene during a \u201ccrime in progress,\u201d but the situation escalated to a car chase and gunfire.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf he did something he shouldn\u2019t be doing, then he should be arrested \u2013 not shot,<\/em>\u201d said the teen\u2019s cousin, Nora Rubi, who gathered with the teen\u2019s family to demand answers at Addison police station on Monday night, according<\/a>\u00a0to The Dallas Morning News.<\/p>\n Jose Raul Cruz, 16, was shot and killed on Sunday night. That\u2019s when an off-duty Farmers Branch police officer, Ken Johnson, allegedly saw Cruz and another male breaking into a vehicle in a parking lot.<\/p>\n Police said there had been a series of vehicle break-ins in the neighborhood. Officer Johnson, who was not in uniform, saw the pair leave in Cruz\u2019s red Dodge Challenger, so he pursued them in his SUV. Half a mile later, the vehicles collided. <\/p>\n In surveillance footage obtained<\/a>\u00a0by WFAA, Johnson\u2019s black Chevrolet Tahoe appears to hit the back of the Challenger, which then spins out of control at the intersection by a Shell station in Addison.<\/p>\n Police said after an \u201caltercation,\u201d Johnson<\/em> fired his gun, hitting Cruz and his passenger. Details of the altercation have not been released. Cruz died at the scene. His passenger, Edgar Rodriguez, was shot in the head, but is expected to survive.<\/p>\n The police officer was not injured but is claimed to have feared for his life, according<\/a>\u00a0to The Dallas Morning News. Johnson repeatedly told them he was a police officer, and police have declined to say whether Cruz or Rodriguez were armed.<\/p>\n Johnson fired his duty weapon \u201cbecause he was in fear of his life and he felt that fear was justified,\u201d<\/em> attorney Chris Livingston told the Morning News.<\/p>\n Cruz\u2019s family and others have called for a thorough investigation.<\/p>\n \u201cMy son was killed because of racism,\u201d<\/em> Ana Henriquez told the Dallas Morning News while holding a framed picture of Cruz.<\/p>\n The group, which chanted \u201cJose Cruz,\u201d<\/em> later moved to the Farmers Branch police headquarters.<\/p>\n Addison police are investigating the shooting, and Farmers Branch police are reviewing the officer\u2019s actions. Both departments have declined to comment on the investigation.<\/p>\n Henriquez said she wants the US Department of Justice and FBI to get involved.<\/p>\n Johnson has been placed on paid administrative leave which is usual during an investigation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Via RT<\/a>.
