{"id":231030,"date":"2016-03-12T03:09:47","date_gmt":"2016-03-12T03:09:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/saudi-arabia-fights-torture-promotes-human-rights-gulf-state-tells-un\/"},"modified":"2016-03-12T03:09:47","modified_gmt":"2016-03-12T03:09:47","slug":"saudi-arabia-fights-torture-promotes-human-rights-gulf-state-tells-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/saudi-arabia-fights-torture-promotes-human-rights-gulf-state-tells-un\/","title":{"rendered":"Saudi Arabia \u2018fights torture\u2019 &amp; \u2018promotes human rights,\u2019 Gulf state tells UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.com\/files\/2016.03\/thumbnail\/56e2b9c2c4618821028b4567.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        Saudi Arabia told the United Nations Human Rights Council that it \u201cfights torture\u201d and leads the way on human rights, despite planning to hang three juveniles on the basis of \u201cconfessions\u201d allegedly extracted under duress.<\/p>\n<div readability=\"76\">\n<p>Saudi Arabia\u2019s Minister of Culture and Information, Bandar al-Ali, made the comments in Geneva in response to a report delivered to the UN Human Rights Council by Juan Mendez, the special rapporteur on torture.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Ali said the Gulf theocracy, which is closely allied to the UK, is a bastion of human rights.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GhySUucuxsM\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Saudi Arabia is one of the very first countries which promoted human rights,<\/em>\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Such a support and a commitment to promote and protect human rights is but a duty imposed by the Islamic sharia from which the statutes of my country is derived<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also defended Saudi Arabia\u2019s record on torture, saying the regime \u201c<em>fights<\/em>\u201d the practice in all of its \u201c<em>physical and moral manifestations through strict legislation and executive measures that are applied on all.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His claims come as human rights groups fear three minors, imprisoned since 2012 in the wake of protests in the east of the country and tortured in captivity, will be executed soon.<\/p>\n<p>According to UK charity Reprieve, Abdullah al Zaher, Ali al Nimr and Dawood al Marhoon were tortured into confessing by the shadowy Specialized Criminal Court.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BwDaGVN3CiA\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Reprieve death penalty team chief Maya Foa said: \u201c<em>Saudi Arabia\u2019s claims to the UN Human Rights Council sound like a sick joke when one considers the reality within the country.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said \u201ct<em>he arrest, torture and execution of juveniles, political protestors and others<\/em>\u201d is common Saudi practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Countries that are close to Saudi Arabia \u2013 including the UK \u2013 must urge that government to halt these terrible abuses, instead of simply trying to cover them up with paper-thin rhetoric,<\/em>\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/335271-saudi-arabia-torture-denial\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
