{"id":230193,"date":"2016-03-09T03:20:46","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T03:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/the-honduras-killing-field\/"},"modified":"2016-03-09T03:20:46","modified_gmt":"2016-03-09T03:20:46","slug":"the-honduras-killing-field","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/the-honduras-killing-field\/","title":{"rendered":"The Honduras Killing Field"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"778.49263424679\">\n<p>The murder of prominent Honduras environmental activist Berta Caceres recalls Hillary Clinton\u2019s role in supporting a right-wing coup in 2009 that ousted an elected progressive president and turned Honduras into a killing field, writes Dennis J Bernstein.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-17437\"\/>By Dennis J Bernstein<\/p>\n<p>An apparent resurgence of death-squad violence in Honduras, including the March 3 murder of prominent Honduran indigenous rights activist Berta C\u00e1ceres, is a harsh reminder of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton\u2019s role in defending a 2009 coup that ousted leftist President Manuel Zelaya and cleared the way for the restoration of right-wing rule in the impoverished Central American nation.<\/p>\n<p>Caceres, the recent winner of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, was murdered in her hometown of La Esperenza, Intibuc\u00e1, in the highlands near the Salvadoran border. He has since been forcibly stopped from leaving Honduras.<\/p>\n<p>The Honduran Government has characterized the killing of C\u00e1ceres as a common burglary gone bad, but her friends and close associates\u00a0reject the government claims as preposterous and part of an emerging cover-up.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, COPINH, the indigenous rights group that C\u00e1ceres was closely associated with, characterized her close-range murder as an assassination.
