On January 22, Israelis voted. Over 5.6 million were eligible. About 1,000 polling stations accommodated them. In most places, they stayed open until 10PM. Rural areas, small towns, and hospitals closed theirs at 8PM.\u00a0Voting required presenting a valid ID, passport or driver\u2019s license. Anyone not sure where to go can check. Israel\u2019s Central Elections Committee posted relevant information online. A hotline was set up for the same purpose.Voters further than 20km from assigned polling stations got free rides or public transportation there and back. Tickets were supplied. Getting them required presenting valid IDs or other form of identification.<\/p>\n

Specially adapted polling stations accommodated disabled voters. For the first time, Israelis could follow ballot counting online in real time. Special cell phones permitted it.<\/p>\n

Within hours after polls close, an estimated 85% of votes were counted. Before end of day January 23, they\u2019ll all be. They\u2019ll be published as soon as available.<\/p>\n

Likud\/Yisrael Beiteinu has minority support. It\u2019s enough to stay dominant. Coalition partners will be chosen. Negotiations can take days, weeks or at times longer.<\/p>\n

Near final results show Likud\/Yisrael Beiteinu won 31 of 120 seats. Netanyahu will remain prime minister. He said he\u2019ll begin working toward forming \u201cas broad a (coalition) government as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Follow-up reports will explain more.<\/p>\n

Money power rules America and other Western societies. Israel chose the same path. Wealth, power and privilege alone matter. Hardline rule is entrenched.<\/p>\n

Democracy is more hypocrisy than real. In October 2007, Haaretz<\/a> contrasted \u201coccupying Land of Israel to the democratic Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n

It called for \u201cdebate about Israel\u2019s control over the lives of Palestinians deprived of civil rights\u2026.Israeli democracy suffers from an essential flaw.\u201d It\u2019s more hypocrisy than real.<\/p>\n

Fast forward five years. Things today are far worse. Democracy exists for privileged few alone. Inequality, racism, sexism, exploitation, capitalist excess, imperialism, and repressive harshness define policy.<\/p>\n

Affording Netanyahu four more years deprives millions of Israelis of their rights. Palestinians have none. Arab citizens are called fifth column threats.<\/p>\n

Haaretz contributors had their say. Their concerns reflect crisis conditions becoming graver.<\/p>\n

An editorial<\/a> said<\/p>\n

\u201cIsraelis are being called upon to vote at a time when the country\u2019s democracy faces real and present dangers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Right-wing hardliners are diabolical. Their agenda is clear. They intend \u201cto undermine the state\u2019s social and governmental institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democratic freedoms are threatened. Extremists target \u201cequal rights for all citizens, human rights, the judicial system, freedom of the press, and the right of citizens\u2019 groups to operate unhindered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Voting right-wing \u201cindicates a preference for territories over peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Doing so undermines \u201cdemocratic values.\u201d Extremists govern Israel. Its future hangs in the balance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis election, there\u2019s only one option for Israelis.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s become the \u201cState of Netanyahu,\u201d said Yossi Verter<\/a>. \u201cHe controls the broadcast media to a great extent.\u201d<\/p>\n

He does it directly through the Israel Broadcasting Authority. He has indirect control through commercial television and dominant right-wing publications.<\/p>\n

They spread his lies. They propagate his message. They ignore \u201cdark corners\u201d he wants concealed.<\/p>\n

Israeli electoral politics reflects America\u2019s. Horse race journalism dominates political reporting. Rhetoric substitutes for reality. Issues aren\u2019t discussed. Voters are left uninformed in the dark.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s election lacked substance. Party politics, personality profiles, likely coalition partners, he said, she said, and who\u2019s ahead, who\u2019s behind reflected daily discourse.<\/p>\n

Likud\/Yisrael Beiteinu presented no party platform. Netanyahu got away with it. Major issues went unaddressed.<\/p>\n

Trust him on faith, he urged. Israel\u2019s dominant media didn\u2019t hold his feet to the fire.<\/p>\n

Sefi Rachlevsky<\/a> headlined\u201dA wasted vote is a vote for Bibi,\u201d saying:<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s election was \u201cexistential.\u201d Iran didn\u2019t disappear. Along with US\/Israeli relations, its Netanyahu\u2019s main foreign policy issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no excitement about\u201d supporting him. He\u2019s \u201cviewed as the oppressor of the people.\u201d He reflects \u201cfascism\u201d writ large. Imagine affording him four more years.<\/p>\n

Nehemia Shtrasle<\/a>r headlined \u201cThe mission: Fool the voters today,\u201d saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cBibi\u2019s method\u201d prioritized winning right-wing votes. Late in the game he sought centrist ones. His strategy reflected \u201chocus-pocus, deception and outright lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He won votes anyway he could. His politics are down and dirty. They reflect his dark side. Rhetorically he supports peace. In reality, he deplores it. He calls it a waste of time.<\/p>\n

In two terms, he did nothing to pursue it. As long as he\u2019s prime minister, achieving it is impossible. He prioritizes conflict and instability. He invents enemies to hype fear.<\/p>\n

He menaces the entire region. He threatens to embroil it in war. He doesn\u2019t negotiate. He demands. He wants Israel made ethnically pure.<\/p>\n

He wants Arabs marginalized, denied and brutalized. He imposes harsh conditions. He hopes they\u2019re tough enough to get them to vote with their feet and leave. Dispossessions give others no choice.<\/p>\n

Israeli voters have few. Facts and truth don\u2019t matter. Strategy calls for \u201cfool(ing) the public \u2014 just for today, at the polling booth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Idan Sasson<\/a> \u201clove(s) Israel,\u201d he says. \u201cDon\u2019t vote for democracy\u2019s death certificate,\u201d he urges.<\/p>\n

Conditions today reflect Israel\u2019s \u201cmost existentially troubling period,\u201d he believes.<\/p>\n

Likely new coalition partners worry him. He may never again be able to call Israel a democracy. Others are likeminded. Israeli scholars agree.<\/p>\n

He quoted an unnamed friend saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael is the biggest project of the Jewish people in history, and the occupation is the biggest problem facing Israel right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The \u201cwhole world is watching,\u201d he said. He cares and prioritizes Israeli\/Arab coexistence. He needs majority caring to achieve it. It\u2019s nowhere in sight.<\/p>\n

Gideon Levy and Alex Levac<\/a> headlined \u201cGood night and good luck.\u201d Television news pioneer Edward R. Murrow first said it. He used it to end broadcasts.<\/p>\n

Levy and Levac chose good company. Israel reflects complacency and apathy, they said. Electoral fervor is absent. Netanyahu\u2019s unfit to serve. Former Shin Bet heads deplore giving him another four years.<\/p>\n

They went public saying so. It didn\u2019t make enough of a difference to matter. Nor do occupation harshness, social injustice, or Israel\u2019s \u201cabominable international standing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c(N)one of this seemed to faze\u201d people. \u201cThe candidates were groggy. Their listeners were sleepy. The parlor meetings, assemblies and rallies were all somnolent, with candidates and voters snoring in unison.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everything in the campaign was a \u201cbig yawn.\u201d Public anger was absent. Candidates\u2019 feet weren\u2019t held to the fire. Voters asked \u201cpolite questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c(T)rivial matters\u201d substituted for real ones. Candidates ducked them.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWhere is the hatred when you need it? Where is the fervor and the fire \u2014 or at least a little smoke?\u201d It was out of sight and mind.<\/p>\n

Gatherings were absent. Rallies weren\u2019t held. Parlor meetings were sparsely attended. Electoral campaigning was boring.<\/p>\n

Platform committees used to conduct fiery debates. Parlor meetings and assemblies once mattered. Party branches became \u201ckindergartens and stores.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Hotels stand on former party headquarters ground. Except in Arab communities, posters were absent. Once they hung from balconies and trees everywhere.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWhere are the flyers that used to be dropped from the sky and covered the ground of our youth? Where are the cars with their blaring loudspeakers?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Tourists arriving had no idea about election season. They had to ask or be told to know.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow lacking was this election campaign in great ideas; how shallow and empty of ideals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Netanyahu was the only issue \u2014 \u201cwhat he wears and how he looks.\u201d What about what he stands for? What about great harm he caused Arabs, Jews, and regional neighbors?<\/p>\n

What about prioritizing peace, rule of law principles, and real democracy. What about social justice, supporting Palestinian rights, and a nation fit to live in? What about doing what\u2019s right, not wrong?<\/p>\n

\u201cThank God it\u2019s over,\u201d Levy and Levac said. \u201c(S)noozefest\u201d substituted for substance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maybe next time something will change. Maybe Israelis will decide it matters.<\/p>\n
