Clinton has consistently stood for a war-like\u00a0U.S. foreign policy that ignores international law and relies on brinkmanship and military force, writes Nicolas J S Davies.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-17270\"\/>By Nicolas J S Davies<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.quinnipiac.edu\/news-and-events\/quinnipiac-university-poll\/iowa\/release-detail?ReleaseID=2314\"><u>A poll taken in Iowa<\/u><\/a> before the presidential caucus found that 70 percent of Democrats surveyed trusted Hillary Clinton on foreign policy more than Bernie Sanders.\u00a0But her record as Secretary of State was very different from that of her successor, John Kerry, who has overseen groundbreaking diplomatic breakthroughs with Iran, Cuba and, in a more limited context, even with Russia and Syria.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Clinton\u2019s use of the term \u201cdiplomacy\u201d in talking about her own record is idiosyncratic in that it refers almost entirely to assembling \u201ccoalitions\u201d to support U.S. threats, wars and sanctions against other countries, rather than to peacefully resolving international disputes without the threat or use of force, as normally understood by the word \u201cdiplomacy\u201d and as required by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/sections\/un-charter\/chapter-i\/index.html\"><u>the UN Charter<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4687\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" readability=\"34\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ClintonLieberman1_600_1.jpg?82332e\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4687\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4687\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/lazy-load\/images\/1x1.trans.gif?82332e\" data-lazy-src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/ClintonLieberman1_600_1-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Secretary of State Hillary Clinton meeting with Israel's right-wing Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman in Jerusalem on July 16, 2012. (Photo credit: Department of State)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>There is another term for what Clinton means when she says \u201cdiplomacy,\u201d and that is \u201cbrinksmanship,\u201d which means threatening war to back up\u00a0demands\u00a0on\u00a0other governments.\u00a0In the real world, brinksmanship frequently\u00a0leads to\u00a0war when\u00a0neither\u00a0side\u00a0will\u00a0back down, at which point its only value or purpose is to provide a political narrative to justify\u00a0aggression.<\/p>\n<p>The two main \u201cdiplomatic\u201d achievements Clinton gives herself credit for are: assembling the coalition of NATO and the\u00a0Arab monarchies that bombed Libya into endless, intractable chaos; and imposing painful sanctions on the people of Iran over what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dni.gov\/files\/documents\/Newsroom\/Reports%20and%20Pubs\/20071203_release.pdf\"><u>U.S. intelligence agencies\u00a0<\/u><\/a>concluded by\u00a02007 was\u00a0a peaceful\u00a0civilian nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton\u2019s claim that\u00a0her brinksmanship\u00a0\u201cbrought Iran to the table\u201d over its \u201cnuclear weapons program\u201d is particularly deceptive.\u00a0 It was in fact Secretary&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2016\/02\/19\/hillary-clinton-and-the-dogs-of-war\/\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Secretary of State Clinton grudgingly admits her Iraq War vote was a \u201cmistake,\u201d but it was not\u00a0a one-off misjudgment.
