font-family: Verdana\">Amnesty International has criticised a decision by Canada to rewrite a training manual that put the US and Israel on a list of nations where prisoners risk being tortured.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">The document, released on Friday, named the US, Israel, Afghanistan, China, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Syria as places where torture was used.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td>\u00a0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><span class=\"DetaildSuammary\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.2\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">It had classified some interrogation methods used by the US as torture, including isolation, sleep deprivation and blindfolding, according to an official document obtained by Reuters news agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">\u201cTo see that now be undermined by concerns about embarrassing allies is very disappointing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">Maxime Bernier<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">, Canada\u2019s Foreign Affairs Minister, said that he was embarrassed by the public disclosure of the manual that \u201cwrongly\u201d includes some of Canada\u2019s closest allies.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arabic Typesetting'\" dir=\"rtl\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">\u201cI regret the embarrassment caused by the public disclosure of the manual used in the department\u2019s torture awareness training,\u201d Bernier said.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arabic Typesetting'\" dir=\"rtl\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">\u201cIt contains a list that wrongly includes some of our closest allies. I have directed that the manual be reviewed and rewritten. The manual is neither a policy document nor a statement of policy. As such, it does not convey the government\u2019s views or positions,\u201d the statement added.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arabic Typesetting'\" dir=\"rtl\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Marina Wilson said on Saturday that she could not say yet how long it would take to review the manual or what the process might involve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\"><strong>Sharp response<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arabic Typesetting'\" dir=\"rtl\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">The document had prompted a sharp response from the US, a key NATO ally and trading partner, which asked to be removed from the manual.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arabic Typesetting'\" dir=\"rtl\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">\u201cWe find it to be offensive for us to be on the same list with countries like Iran and China. Quite frankly it\u2019s absurd,\u201d David Wilkins, the US Ambassador told The Associated Press on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">\u201cFor us to be on a list like that is just ridiculous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana\">He said the US does not authorise or condone torture. \u201cWe think it should be removed and we\u2019ve made that request.
