(Photo: Wikipedia)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word \u201cgenie\u201d comes from the Arab <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jinni. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As every child knows, it describes a creature that, when summoned, fulfills your wishes. Doesn\u2019t it seem like the United States played a cruel trick when it further westernized the concept of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jinni<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by uncorking a bottle in Iraq and bidding the unleashed genie to effect regime change. Unfortunately, the genie, given its head by the United States, \u00a0had its own ideas and subsequently lit the region on fire.<\/span><br \/><span id=\"more-30879\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to believe, but 13 years after the United States invaded Iraq and the situation isn\u2019t much better than when it was at its worst. At <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2016\/01\/22\/hell_on_earth_for_iraqis_19000_civilians_killed_in_less_than_two_years_roughly_28_per_day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salon, Ben Norton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> writes:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"26.952789699571\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least 18,802 civilians were killed and 36,245 wounded in the country in the 22 months between Jan. 1, 2014, and Oct. 31, 2015, according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uniraq.org\/images\/humanrights\/UNAMI-OHCHR_%20POC%20Report_FINAL_01%20May-31%20October%202015_FINAL_11Jan2016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Report on the Protection of Civilians in the Armed Conflict in Iraq<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another 3,206,736 Iraqis were internally displaced, including more than 1 million school-age children, in the 21 months from January 2014 to September 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study emphasizes that these are conservative estimates, and \u201cthe actual number of civilian causalities could be much higher than recorded.\u201d Moreover, the U.N. indicates that the number of civilians who have died from secondary effects of the violence, such as lack of access to food, water or medical care, is unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s on the heels of<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8.82421875\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 the Iraq War, from March 2003 to December 2011 [when] more than 1 million people were killed \u2014 \u201ca conservative estimate,\u201d according to a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.psr.org\/resources\/body-count.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Nobel Prize-winning organization the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the horror itself, what\u2019s disturbing is that if confronted with that information, most Americans would likely declare that we gave Iraqis their freedom; what they have done with it is on them. No, what we gave them was a vacuum of a state without legitimate security services after we disbanded its army.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, the likes of George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld would be indicted. The latter are too old to yield any satisfaction in their jailing. But, of course, none of them would ever be indicted because too many Americans are implicated along with them.
