A conquistador treats his helots<br \/>\non the home front with the same contempt he has for his subjects abroad. In<br \/>\nboth cases, conquest and subjugation is the goal \u2014 and rebellion is the inevitable<br \/>\nresult.<\/p>\n<p>Just as the people of Iraq rose up and finally threw out the American occupiers,<br \/>\nso the people in the American West are rising up against their federal overlords.<br \/>\nThis is the reason for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2016\/01\/03\/militia-members-occupy-us-building-in-oregon-after-protest\/78226600\/\">the<br \/>\noccupation of a federal facility in Burns, Oregon<\/a>, where hundreds of protesters<br \/>\nrallied against the jailing of ranchers Dwight Hammond and his son Steve.<\/p>\n<p>The Hammond case has become a <i>cause celebre<\/i> West of the Mississippi,<br \/>\nwhere federal control of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BernardKingIII\/status\/683550430245212161\">huge swathes<br \/>\nof real estate<\/a> has become a life and death issue for ranchers and others<br \/>\nwho make their living off the land. As the feds encroach on their livelihood,<br \/>\nthey are pushing back, and nothing illustrates this better than the Hammond<br \/>\ncase.<\/p>\n<p>In 2001, the Hammonds started a controlled burn on their own land to eliminate<br \/>\ninvasive junipers from ruining grazing for cattle: the fire spread to neighboring<br \/>\nfederal lands. As the <i>Tri-State Livestock News<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tsln.com\/news\/18837869-113\/where-theres-smoke\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBodyText\"><i>\u201cThe first fire, in 2001, was a planned burn on Hammonds\u2019<br \/>\nown property to reduce juniper trees that have become invasive in that part<br \/>\nof the country. That fire burned outside the Hammonds\u2019 private property line<br \/>\nand took in 138 acres of unfenced BLM land before the Hammonds got it put out.<br \/>\nNo BLM firefighters were needed to help extinguish the fire and no fences were<br \/>\ndamaged.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201c\u2019They called and got permission to light the fire,\u2019 Dwight\u2019s wife, Susan,<br \/>\nsaid, adding that was customary for ranchers conducting range management burns<br \/>\n\u2014 a common practice in the area.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/justin\/2016\/01\/03\/the-war-against-the-cowboys\/\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As our old republic fades into history, replaced by a voracious global Empire, the division between foreign policy and domestic policy is erased.
