{"id":205474,"date":"2015-12-02T21:28:43","date_gmt":"2015-12-02T21:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=205474"},"modified":"2015-12-02T21:28:43","modified_gmt":"2015-12-02T21:28:43","slug":"great-partners-pentagon-rejects-russian-evidence-turkey-aiding-isis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/great-partners-pentagon-rejects-russian-evidence-turkey-aiding-isis\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Great partners&#8217;: Pentagon rejects Russian evidence of Turkey aiding ISIS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Pentagon spokesman rejected Russia\u2019s evidence of Turkey\u2019s involvement in oil deals with Islamic State militants, calling Turkey a \u201cgreat partner\u201d just a day after his boss complained to Congress that Ankara was not fighting ISIS enough.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em>\u201cLet me be very clear that we flatly reject any notion that the Turks are somehow working with ISIL,\u201d<\/em> said Colonel Steve Warren, spokesman for the US-led coalition fighting against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS\/ISIL). <em>\u201cThat is preposterous and kind of ridiculous. We absolutely, flatly reject that notion.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Warren was responding to questions about the evidence presented by the Russian Defense Ministry on Wednesday, including satellite photos and maps pointing the finger at Turkey \u2014 and President Recep Erdogan personally \u2014 for aiding the militants in smuggling oil.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Turks have been great partner to us in the fight against ISIL. They are hosting our aircraft, they are conducting strikes, they are supporting the moderate Syrian opposition,\u201d<\/em> Warren told reporters during a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?401496-1\/defense-department-briefing-military-operations-isis&amp;live\">weekly Pentagon briefing<\/a> from Operation Inherent Resolve headquarters in Baghdad. <em>\u201cThey\u2019ve been good partners here. Any thought that the Turks, that the Turkish government is somehow working with ISIL is just preposterous and completely untrue.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Just yesterday, however, US Defense Secretary Ash Carter was telling the House Armed Services Committee that most of Turkey\u2019s military operations were directed against the Kurds, rather than the self-proclaimed Islamic State.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMost of their air operations are not directed at ISIL,\u201d<\/em> Carter told lawmakers. <em>\u201cThey are directed at the PKK, which we understand their concern about \u2013 it\u2019s a terrorist organization within their borders \u2013 but we would like to see them do more against ISIL.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The State Department likewise dismissed the Russian evidence as <em>\u201cuntrue,\u201d<\/em> though spokesman Mark Toner admitted that he had not seen the photographs and only heard about them secondhand. Toner echoed Warren\u2019s remarks, saying the smuggling operation something that is <em>\u201cdecades old.\u201d<\/em> He ventured that IS does not profit from the illegal trade directly, but only through extorting toll fees from the smugglers.<\/p>\n<p>Warren had previously said the oil smuggling <em>\u201cgoes back decades,\u201d<\/em> and that the US was working to stop it by having Turkey tighten its border controls.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/324263-russia-briefing-isis-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.com\/files\/2015.12\/thumbnail\/565ef33ac461884f3d8b45bc.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 syria.mil.ru\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>While the US has acknowledged that oil smuggling is a major source of revenue for the IS, the US-led coalition had not bombed any of the tankers until mid-November, following an announcement from Moscow that Russian planes would begin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/322614-russian-warplanes-isis-oil-trucks\/\">striking the convoys<\/a> described as a <em><em>\u201cliving pipeline.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The outspoken rejection of Russia\u2019s evidence by State Department and Pentagon spokesmen not only clashed with Secretary Carter\u2019s remarks, but also with an assessment made last year by US Vice-President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>In a speech at Harvard University last October, Biden suggested that US allies in the Middle East were so eager to overthrow the Syrian government that they were pouring <em>\u201chundreds of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of tons of weapons\u201d<\/em> into supporting opposition fighters \u2014 including jihadists like Al-Qaeda and what would become IS.<\/p>\n<p>Biden specifically mentioned Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. After the outraged Erdogan demanded an apology, Biden\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/193236-biden-apologizes-turkey-isis\/\">said he was sorry<\/a> for any implication that Turkey might have helped <em>\u201cISIL or other violent extremists in Syria,\u201d<\/em> according to the White House.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry presented photographic evidence showing hundreds of oil tanker trucks moving to and from the Turkish border through IS-controlled territory. A major source of the militants\u2019 revenue, oil is smuggled out of Syria along three major routes \u2014 one on the Turkish coast and two in southeastern Turkey, at Batman and Cizre \u2014 according to Lieutenant General Sergey Rudskoy.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, up to 2,000 fighters, 120 tons of ammunition, and 250 vehicles have been delivered to Islamic State and Al-Nusra militants from Turkish territory, said Lieutenant General Mikhail Mizintsev.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAccording to reliable intelligence reports, the Turkish side has been taking such actions for a long time and on a regular basis.
