No, it\u2019s not the end of \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d \u2013 it\u2019s yoga and meditation classes.<\/p>\n<p>A new Mind Fitness Training program being tested in the U.S. military has integrated yoga, breathing classes and meditation alongside other more traditional training regimes to keep soldiers calm and mentally fit and to reduce depression and use of alcohol and drugs. To Perkins, however, this new initiative is a stand-in for one\u2019s personal relationship with God.<\/p>\n<p>When he heard about the goals of the program \u2013 that yoga promotes relaxation, mental calm, productivity and restraint from substances\u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mediaite.com%2Fonline%2Ftony-perkins-upset-that-goofy-yoga-classes-driving-religion-out-of-military%2F\">he exploded:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhat a coincidence\u2014so does faith! Unfortunately, the military seems intent on driving religion out and replacing it with wacky substitutes,\u201d he said on his morning radio program. \u201cThey\u2019ve added atheist chaplains, Wiccan worship centers, and now, meditation classes. But none of them are as effective or as constructive as a personal relationship with God. Unfortunately, though, it\u2019s mind over what matters\u2014and that\u2019s faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Perhaps one shouldn\u2019t tell Perkins this, but faith hasn\u2019t really been keeping up its end of the bargain lately \u2013 at least as far as the mental health of service members goes. The suicide rate of active service members has skyrocketed in the last few years. In 2012, the U.S. military <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbsnews.com%2F8301-201_162-57449214%2Fu.s-military-averaging-a-suicide-a-day-in-2012%2F\">averaged one suicide every single day<\/a>, with service members were \u2013 shockingly \u2013 more <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.democracynow.org%2F2012%2F6%2F13%2Fmilitary_suicide_epidemic_more_us_soldiers\">likely to commit suicide than be killed on the battlefield.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, there is already a disturbing pattern of aggressive Christian proselytizing and accusations of government-sponsored prayer in major military institutions, including at <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Ffreethinker.co.uk%2F2012%2F12%2F25%2Fwest-point-military-academy-warned-stop-forcing-religion-on-your-cadets%2F\">West Point<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffingtonpost.com%2F2012%2F07%2F17%2Fair-force-academy-religion-proselytism_n_1678092.html\">US Air Force Academy<\/a>, which some say is more divisive than healing.\u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffingtonpost.com%2F2012%2F07%2F17%2Fair-force-academy-religion-proselytism_n_1678092.html\">Yale Divinity School study voiced &#8220;<\/a>concern that the overwhelmingly evangelical tone of general Protestant worship encouraged religious divisions rather than fostering understanding among basic cadets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, new programs like the Mind Fitness Training program are, in part, a non-religious response to these soaring suicide rates and the recognition that, for active service members, mental health and well being is just as important as physical training.<\/p>\n<p>So far, service members appear to appreciate the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people thought it would be a waste of time,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtontimes.com%2Fnews%2F2012%2Fdec%2F5%2Fmarines-expanding-use-of-meditation-training%2F%3Fpage%3Dall\">Sgt. There was a benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Perkins is devoted to espousing his twisted religious doctrine, even if it threatens the health and safety of U.S. service members.
