British officials deny diplomat\u2019s allegations.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Eric Zuesse<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A major <i>Guardian<\/i> exclusive news story, on Tuesday, September 15th, headlined\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/sep\/15\/west-ignored-russian-offer-in-2012-to-have-syrias-assad-step-aside\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWest &#8216;ignored Russian offer in 2012 to have Syria&#8217;s Assad step aside\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Their Julian Borger &amp; Bastien Inzaurralde\u00a0reported:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Former Finnish president and Nobel peace prize laureate Martti Ahtisaari said western powers failed to seize on the proposal <\/i>[for the U.S. and Russia to negotiate a replacement for Assad that would be accetable to both the U.S. and Russia]<i>.\u00a0\u2026 He said that the US, Britain and France were so convinced that the Syrian dictator was about to fall, they ignored the <\/i>[Russian] <i>proposal.\u00a0\u201cIt was an opportunity lost in 2012,\u201d Ahtisaari said in an interview.\u00a0\u2026\u00a0On 22 February 2012 he was sent to meet the missions of the permanent five nations (the US, Russia, UK, France and China) at UN headquarters in New York by The Elders, a group of\u00a0former world leaders advocating peace and human rights that has included Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, and former UN secretary general Kofi Annan.\u00a0\u2026 <\/i>[Ahtisaari said Vitaly Churkin, Russia\u2019s U.N. Ambassador]\u00a0<i>\u201csaid three things: One \u2014 we should not give arms to the opposition. Two \u2014 we should get a dialogue going between the opposition and Assad straight away. Three \u2014 we should find an\u00a0elegant way for Assad to step aside.\u201d &#8230;<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Churkin had just returned from a trip to Moscow and there seemed little doubt he was raising the proposal on behalf of the Kremlin.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Ahtisaari said he passed on the message to the American, British and French missions at the UN, but he said: \u201cNothing happened because I think all these, and many others, were\u00a0convinced that Assad would be thrown out of office in a few weeks<\/i> [i.e, that the U.S.-Saudi-Qatari-Turkish-backed forces would win]<i>\u201d\u00a0\u2026<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Sir John Jenkins \u2014 a former director of the Middle East department of the UK\u2019s Foreign Office\u00a0\u2026 <\/i>[said]<i>\u00a0\u201cThe weakest point is Ahtisaari\u2019s claim that Churkin was speaking with Moscow\u2019s authority. I think if he had told me what Churkin had said, I would have replied I wanted to hear it from\u00a0<\/i>[Russian President Vladimir] <i>Putin too before I could take it seriously.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, that denial not only assumes that Russia\u2019s U.N. Ambassador didn\u2019t represent the Kremlin, but it conflicts with Bloomberg News having headlined on 6 June 2012,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2012-06-06\/russia-open-to-syria-transition-in-shift-away-from-assad\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cRussia Open to Syria Transition in Shift Away From Assad,\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0where Flavia Krause-Jackson and Henry Meyer\u00a0reported that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>As Syria slides toward civil war, Russia is signaling that it no longer views President Bashar al-Assad\u2019s position as tenable and is working with the U.S. to seek an orderly transition.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>A U.S. delegation headed by Fred Hof, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton\u2019s special adviser on Syria, is scheduled to meet with Russian counterparts June 8 in Moscow. They will try to forge a common\u00a0approach to moving Assad aside \u2013 or even out of the country \u2013 with a goal of replacing him with someone acceptable to both sides in the conflict, according to two U.S. officials speaking on condition of\u00a0anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In other words: the U.S. demanded victory for the Sunni (i.e., the Saudi-backed) Islamic forces, against the secular dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad, a Shiite and ally of Shiite Iran. The U.S. was determined to crush Iran\u2019s and Russia\u2019s ally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The context in which this is being revealed now is:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On September 14th in Lebanon, Now Media bannered,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/now.mmedia.me\/lb\/en\/commentary\/565902-assad-is-staying\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8220;Assad is staying,\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and reporter Hussain Abdul-Hussain wrote:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>To stem the flood of Syrian refugees into their countries, Europeans have found a solution: keep Syrian President Bashar Assad\u00a0in power so that he can lock up Syrians, again, in the big prison that Syria was before 2011. And if Assad has to kill hundreds of\u00a0thousands more Syrians, that would be a lesser price for Europeans to pay than the world blaming them for images of frightened,\u00a0bruised and dead Syrian refugees. In Washington, word has it that National Security Advisor Susan Rice formed a committee of Syria experts, weeks ago, and\u00a0tasked them with presenting her schemes of \u201cliving with Assad.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In other words: the flood of U.S.-caused refugees from Syria into the EU (due to U.S. bombing of Assad\u2019s forces) has forced Obama to recognize that the Western Alliance is splitting up, over this issue, and so Obama must back-peddle fast, while there still remains time and opportunity to prevent the breakup of NATO itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The cause of Syria\u2019s incredible bloodshed is the bombing by U.S. President Obama. He didn\u2019t care about the millions displaced and the hundreds of thousands killed; he was determined to defeat Russia; and his allies in this were the Saudi and Qatari royals and their Turkish fellow-Sunnis. But he, and they, have lost; so, Obama now needs to make a fundamental choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">America\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/09\/big-lie-u-s-allies-with-saudis-because-were-addicted-to-their-oil.html\"><span class=\"s2\">longstanding secret alliance<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/02\/al-qaedas-bookkeeper-spills-beans.html\"><span class=\"s2\">the top financial backers of Islamic jihad<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is finally being put to the test: Will the U.S. now go with the Europeans and ally with, and admit into NATO, Russia,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/09\/vladimir-putins-foreign-policy-objectives-his-desire-for-u-s-to-be-an-ally.html\"><span class=\"s2\">which has wanted<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/09\/how-america-double-crossed-russia-and-shamed-the-west.html\"><span class=\"s3\">was promised NATO membership (if NATO wouldn\u2019t simply end when the Cold War did)<\/span><\/a>; or will the U.S. instead remain allied with the top financial backers of Islamic jihadists,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/02\/al-qaedas-bookkeeper-spills-beans.html\"><span class=\"s2\">the Saudi and other Arabic oil-state royals<\/span><\/a>? Europe is now siding with Russia\u2019s Putin on Syria. Will Obama too go with Putin, or will he instead stay with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/09\/big-lie-u-s-allies-with-saudis-because-were-addicted-to-their-oil.html\"><span class=\"s3\">Saudi King Salman<\/span><\/a>, who continues his own bombings in Yemen (which are also directed against Shiites)?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Furthermore, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/america-drops-bombs-the-eu-gets-refugees-and-blame-this-is-insane\/5474310\"><span class=\"s2\">the U.S. was itself behind the sarin gas attack that Obama had been hoping to use as reason to send U.S. bombers into Iraq<\/span><\/a>.
