Mark Williams-Thomas (@mwilliamsthomas) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mwilliamsthomas\/status\/274181776283406337?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 29, 2012<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>If the tweet by Mr Thomas is accurate, it is unclear why Harris has been questioned, however <a href=\"http:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/1018490\/savile-inquiry-police-question-man-in-his-80s\" target=\"_blank\">Sky News<\/a>\u00a0have reported that it is on suspicion of sexual offences after officers searched an address in Berkshire on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>It is possible that Harris was interviewed as a witness to a criminal act, to help police with their enquiry &#8211; he was released without charge.<\/p>\n<p>So far, four people have been arrested so far in relation to alleged sexual offences by Savile and others.<\/p>\n<p>Singer Gary Glitter, comedian Freddie Starr, DJ Dave Lee Travis\u00a0and another unidentified man in his 70s have been bailed as part of the inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>The news, if true, that Rolf Harris has been questioned by police, has sent shockwaves through social media networks.<\/p>\n<p>Harris\u00a0is a well respected and much loved celebrity with strong ties to the British Monarchy.\u00a0He was commissioned to paint a portrait of HM Queen\u00a0Elizabeth II for her 80th birthday, which was unveiled on 19 December 2005.<\/p>\n<p>During the Diamond Jubilee Concert this year, Rolf Harris described Queen as a &#8216;living testimony to the power of kindness, dedication, tolerance and loyalty&#8217; and stated &#8220;I had the privilege of meeting Her Majesty several times.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/rolf-queen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17875\" title=\"rolf-queen\" src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/rolf-queen-485x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Harris received a CBE from the Princess Royal in 2006, and was also appointed an MBE in 1968 and an OBE in 1977.<\/p>\n<p>The Metropolitan police have over 400\u00a0lines of enquiry after\u00a0two weeks of gathering information from both the public and a number of organisations, with\u00a0over 450 potential victims having been identified.<\/p>\n<p>Operation Yewtree,\u00a0the enquiry into alleged child sexual exploitation by the late Jimmy Savile and others, has moved from an assessment to a formal criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: A report by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-20544939\" target=\"_blank\">The BBC<\/a>\u00a0does not name Harris, but states:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A man in his 80s has been released after being interviewed by detectives investigating allegations which arose following revelations about TV presenter Jimmy Savile.<\/p>\n<p>The man, from Berkshire, attended a London police station by appointment and was interviewed under caution.<\/p>\n<p>Officers from the Metropolitan Police&#8217;s Operation Yewtree searched an address in Berkshire on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The police said it was part of the inquiry not directly related to Savile.<\/p>\n<p>The man arrived at 12:00 GMT, said the Met, and has now &#8220;left police premises&#8221;.
