Thanks for clearing that up, Coke!<\/p>\n<p>Oh.. wait now.. \u00a0something\u00a0doesn&#8217;t seem right..<\/h2>\n<p>###<\/p>\n<p>Coca-Cola has pumped millions of dollars into the founding of a new nonprofit that claims there is &#8220;strong evidence&#8221; that lack of exercise is mostly to blame for obesity, not poor diet.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Coke, the leading producer of soda and sugary drinks across the world, has invested heavily in the <a href=\"http:\/\/gebn.org\/\">Global Energy Balance Network<\/a>, a nonprofit run by a handful of university scientists who were offered $4 million by Coke to fund various research projects,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/blogs\/well\/2015\/08\/09\/coca-cola-funds-scientists-who-shift-blame-for-obesity-away-from-bad-diets\/\">according<\/a> to the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>Halting weight gain should be less about dieting and more about <em>&#8220;maintaining an active lifestyle and eating more calories,&#8221;<\/em> the group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gebn.org\/energy-balance-basics\">said<\/a> on its website. The group&#8217;s proof of this claim comes down to two research papers, both of which end with the same footnote:<em> \u201cThe publication of this article was supported by The Coca-Cola Company.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ch77_-nQ7AI\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><br \/>\nThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/gebnetwork\/info?tab=page_info\">organization<\/a> calls itself <em>\u201cthe voice of science\u201d<\/em> on its website. It ultimately bills itself as a <em>&#8220;not for profit dedicated to reversing the obesity &amp; chronic disease epidemics through healthy lifestyle behaviors.&#8221;<\/em>Steven N. Blair, the nonprofit&#8217;s vice president and a top exercise scientist from the University of South Carolina who in recent decades has played a major role in crafting federal guidelines for physical activity, recently touted the Global Energy Balance Network (GEBN) in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharewik.com\/portfolio-items\/the-global-energy-balance-getting-the-word-out\/\">video release<\/a>.<strong>READ MORE:<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/270736-sugary-drinks-kill-study\/\">Suicide by soda: Sugary drinks kill 184,000 people a year, study says<\/a><em>\u201cMost of the focus in the popular media and in the scientific press is, \u2018Oh they\u2019re eating too much, eating too much, eating too much\u2019 \u2013 blaming fast food, blaming sugary drinks and so on,\u201d<\/em> Blair says in the video announcing the organization&#8217;s formation.<em>\u201cAnd there\u2019s really virtually no compelling evidence that that, in fact, is the cause.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/270736-sugary-drinks-kill-study\/\"><\/a>Health experts said GEBN&#8217;s message is misleading and is an effort by a major corporate entity that specializes in sugary drinks to obfuscate the role diet plays in combatting obesity.GEBN&#8217;s<em> \u201cmessage is that obesity is not about the foods or beverages you\u2019re consuming, it\u2019s that you\u2019re not balancing those foods with exercise,\u201d<\/em> said Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, of the University of Ottawa, who first pressed the organization about their funding.Barry M. Popkin, a professor of global nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, likened Coke&#8217;s support for GEBN to the tobacco industry&#8217;s funding of the <em>&#8220;merchants of doubt&#8221;<\/em> who were tasked to sow confusion over the health risks of smoking.<\/p>\n<p>Others went further, suggesting GEBN is part of a deceptive mission to further Coke&#8217;s corporate agenda around the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/in-motion\/263461-pcoca-cola-protest-spain\/\">Coca-Cola employees protest &#8216;humiliating&#8217; company policies in Spain<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Global Energy Balance Network is nothing but a front group for Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola\u2019s agenda here is very clear: Get these researchers to confuse the science and deflect attention from dietary intake.\u201d<\/em> said Marion Nestle, author of the book<em> \u201cSoda Politics\u201d<\/em> and a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University.<\/p>\n<p>James O. Hill is GEBN&#8217;s president and a professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Last year, Coke gave an <em>\u201cunrestricted monetary gift\u201d<\/em> of $1 million to the University of Colorado Foundation. He said Coke has no say in the organization&#8217;s output or message.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey\u2019re not running the show,\u201d<\/em> he told NYT. <em>\u201cWe\u2019re running the show.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>NYT reported that it is unclear if any of the around $4 million in research funding Coke gave to Blair and Dr. Gregory A. Hand, dean of the West Virginia University School of Public Health, ended up as personal income.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs long as everybody is disclosing their potential conflicts and they\u2019re being managed appropriately, that\u2019s the best that you can do,\u201d<\/em> said Hand, a founding member of the group.<em> \u201cIt makes perfect sense that companies would want the best science that they can get.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hill defended the group&#8217;s mission, saying GEBN has not left diet out of its messaging.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf we are out there saying it\u2019s all about physical activity and it\u2019s not about food, then we deserve criticism,\u201d<\/em> he said. <em>\u201cBut I think we haven\u2019t done that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yet the company has often stressed that a sedentary lifestyle is to blame for the obesity crisis.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe media tends to blame the obesity epidemic on our poor eating habits,\u201d<\/em> the group said in a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharewik.com\/portfolio-items\/the-global-energy-balance-getting-the-word-out\/\">news release<\/a>. <em>\u201cBut are those french fries really the culprit?
