{"id":16820,"date":"2012-10-27T19:31:10","date_gmt":"2012-10-27T18:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=16820"},"modified":"2012-10-27T19:37:13","modified_gmt":"2012-10-27T18:37:13","slug":"what-homeland-security-doesnt-want-you-to-see","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/latest-news\/what-homeland-security-doesnt-want-you-to-see\/","title":{"rendered":"What Homeland Security doesn&#8217;t want you to see"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rinf.com\" target=\"_blank\">Mick Meaney<\/a>, rinf.com |<\/p>\n<p>The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has sued the US government for blocking the public from taking photos and recording video footage at international border crossings.<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU claims the ban violates the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was filed as a result of two activists who had their photos deleted by U.S. authorities, when attempting to\u00a0document possible human rights abuses at California-Mexico border crossings.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nation\/nationnow\/la-na-nn-aclu-homeland-security-restrictions-20121026,0,6012810.story\" target=\"_blank\">the L.A. Times<\/a>,\u00a0David Loy, legal director of the ACLU in San Deigo said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The border is not a Constitution-free zone. Border agents are not above the law, and the law guarantees our right to hold them accountable by documenting their conduct.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Activists claim that\u00a0border inspectors have used excessive force and performed humiliating body searches on travelers.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0alleged\u00a0abuse includes inspectors handcuffing a woman&#8217;s ankle to a pole,\u00a0an inspector striking a man in the face and chaining a\u00a0man to a wall.<\/p>\n<p>A 42-year-old man, Anastasio Hernandez, died after federal authorities repeadly\u00a0shot him with a stun gun\u00a0at San Diego\u2019s San Ysidro border crossing.<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU has provided 11\u00a0examples\u00a0of\u00a0misconduct at crossings in California, Arizona and Texas and urged Homeland Security to investigate each one.<\/p>\n<p>Sean Riordan, an attorney for the ACLU in San Diego said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBy no means do we believe we have captured the scope or the depth of the problem.
