{"id":163300,"date":"2015-07-02T16:49:27","date_gmt":"2015-07-02T16:49:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=163300"},"modified":"2015-07-02T16:49:27","modified_gmt":"2015-07-02T16:49:27","slug":"british-govt-scraps-target-child-poverty-eradication-ahead-tax-credits-cut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/latest-news\/british-govt-scraps-target-child-poverty-eradication-ahead-tax-credits-cut\/","title":{"rendered":"British govt. scraps target for child poverty eradication ahead of tax credits cut"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"item-text\">\n<p><strong>The British government has announced plan\u00a0to scrap measures aimed at eradicating 2020 child poverty target before the cut in tax credits.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The official measure has so far\u00a0defined that\u00a0a child is being considered in poverty if it is in a household with less than 60% of the national median average income.\u00a0Iain Duncan Smith, the work and pensions secretary, now wants to replace the system with a new duty to report such as levels of educational attainment, worklessness and addiction.<\/p>\n<p>Now,\u00a0the government will define poverty not in terms of money, but by measuring the number of workless households and educational attainment of children.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMeasures will identify the proportion of children living in workless households. The educational attainment measures will focus on GCSE attainment for all particularly disadvantaged pupils,\u201d Duncan Smith informed MPs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The new approach was proposed during the coalition government but was then blocked by Chancellor\u00a0George Osborne.
