{"id":161609,"date":"2015-06-24T17:42:54","date_gmt":"2015-06-24T17:42:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=161609"},"modified":"2015-06-24T19:48:37","modified_gmt":"2015-06-24T19:48:37","slug":"nowhere-to-hide-facebook-goes-beyond-facial-recognition-to-track-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/editorials\/nowhere-to-hide-facebook-goes-beyond-facial-recognition-to-track-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Nowhere to hide: Facebook goes beyond &#8216;facial recognition&#8217; to track you"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mick Meaney<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\" target=\"_blank\">RINF<\/a>) &#8211; Terrifying new research shows Facebook&#8217;s ambitions to track users has gone far beyond the company&#8217;s &#8216;old&#8217; technology that recognises users faces, which in itself poses a dizzying array of privacy concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/2109700-1501-05703v2.html\" target=\"_blank\">new development<\/a>,\u00a0dubbed Pose Invariant PErson Recognition (PIPER), gathers information about your clothing, hairstyles and body shapes and currently holds a 83% accuracy rate, already incredibly high and is expected to increase even further.<\/p>\n<p>Yann LeCun, head of artificial intelligence at Facebook\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2015\/06\/23\/facebook-facial-recognition\/\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a> how it works:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There are a lot of cues we use. People have characteristic aspects, even if you look at them from the back. For example, you can recognise Mark Zuckerberg very easily, because he always wears a gray T-shirt.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In an effort to ease fears over the invasive technology, Facebook denied\u00a0plans to integrate it onto\u00a0their site.<\/p>\n<p>Ari Entin, a Facebook spokesman told the media:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This is so far, experimental, long-term research. I don&#8217;t think this is something that we would see any time soon.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The networking giant are\u00a0right to thread lightly as they have a history of violating privacy laws. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/16\/technology\/germans-reopen-facebook-privacy-inquiry.html?_r=3&amp;adxnnl=1&amp;pagewanted=all&amp;adxnnlx=1345039530-1OBsyEa5XbE2OcAs6aMlgQ\" target=\"_blank\">In 2012<\/a> the company was ordered to destroy its facial recognition database in Germany after authorities deemed\u00a0it was in violation of German law.\u00a0In 2015 Facebook <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2015\/04\/chicago-man-sues-facebook-over-facial-recognition-use-in-tag-suggestions\/\" target=\"_blank\">was sued<\/a> by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.morganstanleyfa.com\/carlo.licata\/story.htm\">Carlo Licata<\/a>\u00a0who claimed he and others\u00a0had their rights violated under the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilga.gov\/legislation\/ilcs\/ilcs3.asp?ActID=3004&amp;ChapterID=57\">Biometric Information Privacy Act<\/a> (BIPA).<\/p>\n<p>Despite the denials by Facebook that their new technology will not be used, when is the last time a tech company \u00a0&#8211; one that can only survive\u00a0financially\u00a0by collecting information about its users and then selling that information, invested in highly invasive software that it\u00a0did not use it for profit?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mick Meaney (RINF) &#8211; Terrifying new research shows Facebook&#8217;s ambitions to track users has gone far beyond the company&#8217;s &#8216;old&#8217; technology that recognises users faces, which in itself poses a dizzying array of privacy concerns.
