{"id":161512,"date":"2015-06-24T11:46:43","date_gmt":"2015-06-24T11:46:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=161512"},"modified":"2015-06-24T11:46:43","modified_gmt":"2015-06-24T11:46:43","slug":"us-urged-investigate-cia-human-rights-abuses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/latest-news\/us-urged-investigate-cia-human-rights-abuses\/","title":{"rendered":"US urged to investigate CIA human rights abuses"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"item-text\">\n<p><strong>Leading human rights groups have called on the United States Department of Justice to investigate the Central Intelligence Agency\u2019s torture program.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the American Civil Liberties Union sent a letter to US Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Tuesday, asking her to appoint a special prosecutor to probe the CIA torture.<\/p>\n<p>The three groups attached a petition signed by nearly 111,788 concerned individuals to their letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Justice Department has a clear responsibility to carry out a credible and comprehensive criminal investigation into the overwhelming evidence that US officials used torture in violation of US law,\u201d said Kenneth Roth, the Human Rights Watch executive director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Obama administration\u2019s continued failure to act in the face of this mountain of evidence risks sending the message that torture is a valid policy option rather than the crime that it is,\u201d Roth added.<\/p>\n<p>In December last year, the US Senate released a damning report on the CIA\u2019s brutal torture program which was launched after the September 11, 2001 attacks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/Detail\/2015\/06\/24\/417261\/Rights-groups-CIA-torture-program-\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leading human rights groups have called on the United States Department of Justice to investigate the Central Intelligence Agency\u2019s torture program.
