{"id":15742,"date":"2012-09-29T09:55:29","date_gmt":"2012-09-29T08:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=15742"},"modified":"2012-09-29T10:16:08","modified_gmt":"2012-09-29T09:16:08","slug":"bbc-under-fire-for-underhanded-tactics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/media-news\/bbc-under-fire-for-underhanded-tactics\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC caught ripping-off local newspaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mick Meaney, <a href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/media-news\/bbc-under-fire-for-underhanded-tactics\/15742\/\">RINF News<\/a> |<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bbc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15882\" title=\"bbc\" src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bbc.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bbc.jpg 580w, http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bbc-75x36.jpg 75w, http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bbc-150x72.jpg 150w, http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bbc-383x185.jpg 383w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><em style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Image credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kylezoa\" target=\"_blank\">Flickr \/\u00a0kylezoa<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fabricated footage, news fixing, headline theft and product placement are just some of the underhanded tactics the BBC are\u00a0using right now to manipulate and control viewers.<\/p>\n<p>This week a newspaper editor has lashed out at the BBC for\u00a0allegedly stealing news reports from her paper &#8211; without proper attribution.<\/p>\n<p>In a meeting with Labour\u2019s Deputy Leader Harriet Harman,\u00a0editor in chief of\u00a0\u00a0the Reading Chronicle,\u00a0Sally Stevens, slammed BBC radio for reading headlines directly from her newspaper <strong>without crediting the source<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.readingchronicle.co.uk\/opinion\/comment\/articles\/2012\/09\/22\/62822-when-sally-met-harriet-well-have-what-shes-having\/\" target=\"_blank\">In a report<\/a> on the Reading Chronicle website, she claimed\u00a0&#8220;radio presenters can read a page lead out every day masquerading as its own news bulletin&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not the first time the BBC has been caught out using unethical behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>Last month the BBC was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/media\/2012\/aug\/30\/bbc-trust-diane-abbott-this-week\" target=\"_blank\">found guilty<\/a> of breaching editorial guidelines by making excessive payments to\u00a0Labour MP Diane Abbott for her appearance on the BBC 1 political discussion show, This Week,\u00a0totaling\u00a0\u00a36,700 in fees.<\/p>\n<p>BBC guidelines state that MPs should not be paid for appearances when they are &#8220;speaking as a member of their party or expressing political views&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/media\/tv-radio\/bbc-to-issue-global-apology-for-documentaries-that-broke-rules-6719997.html\" target=\"_blank\">In\u00a0February 2012<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0Independent revealed the\u00a0corporation was &#8220;news-fixing&#8221; and had to issue a global apology for breaking editorial rules, when it &#8220;broadcast documentaries made by a London TV company that was earning millions of pounds from PR clients which it featured in its programming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An investigation by\u00a0The BBC Trust&#8217;s Editorial Standards Committee also discovered\u00a015 breaches of editorial guidelines by\u00a0BBC World News.<\/p>\n<p>And it doesn&#8217;t end there.<\/p>\n<p>With the taxpayer being forced to pay \u00a33.6bn in licence fees each year, the BBC is the last place you would expect to find product placement adverts.<\/p>\n<p>However in 2011 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/tvandradio\/bbc\/8802309\/BBC-accused-of-secret-advertising-deal-over-Berghaus-jackets.html#\" target=\"_blank\">viewers accused<\/a> the broadcaster of advertising\u00a0Berghaus\u00a0jackets. Several high profile presenters were seen prominently displaying the company&#8217;s logo on air.<\/p>\n<p>It then emerged that BBC staff receive a 45% discount on Berghaus jackets.<\/p>\n<p>Of course the company denies that any sponsorship deal exists, stating: &#8220;Over the years, BBC reporters have chosen to buy Berghaus products for use while working outdoors.\u00a0Of course, we are pleased that correspondents, camera operators and others working in the media choose our kit, but to be clear, there is no sponsorship agreement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to The Telegraph,\u00a0MPs have labeled it as &#8220;advertising by the back door&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010 RINF discovered the BBC had spent almost \u00a32 million of licence payers money on web advertising, including\u00a0paying search engines such as Google to display links to the BBC website on search results pages, above natural results.<\/p>\n<p>The corporation has also been in the spotlight for deceiving viewers.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, the BBC was accused of deliberately <a href=\"http:\/\/www.primarkresponse.com\/panorama\/content-uploads\/\/2011\/06\/BBC-Trust-Findings.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">falsifying undercover\u00a0footage<\/a> of a Primark workshop in Bangalore, India, which again forced\u00a0The BBC Trust to\u00a0apologise.<\/p>\n<p>This time for using fake images of child labour in its\u00a0Panorama programme.<\/p>\n<p>A Primark spokesman said: \u00a0&#8220;Millions of people have been deceived by Panorama. Viewers who watched the programme, shoppers who were then fed the lie, sourcing experts who believed the lie, teachers and pupils who viewed the programme in lessons, have all been badly let down&#8221; and\u00a0the programme &#8220;relied on fabricated footage to air a programme otherwise based on prejudice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Is this really the kind of journalism you expect from the BBC, especially when you&#8217;re forced to pay a mandatory license fee regardless if you consume their programmes or not?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mick Meaney, RINF News | Image credit: Flickr \/\u00a0kylezoa Fabricated footage, news fixing, headline theft and product placement are just some of the underhanded tactics the BBC are\u00a0using right now to manipulate and control viewers.
