These \u201cchronic\u201d cyber threats stem from hostile nations, terror outfits and hacktivists, a leading cyber-security chief says.<\/p>\n<p>Incidences of hackers attempting to steal confidential data<br \/>\nacross the UK are rising steadily,<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> government<\/span>-commissioned<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> research<\/strong> (RINF Note: Bloody big red flag right there)<\/span>\u00a0released Tuesday suggests.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The study, titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwc.co.uk\/audit-assurance\/publications\/2015-information-security-breaches-survey.jhtml\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cInformation Security Breaches,\u201d<\/a> was<br \/>\nconducted by auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).<\/p>\n<p>It estimates the average cost of the most serious security<br \/>\nbreaches to large firms has increased dramatically in the past<br \/>\nyear, and could now be as high as \u00a33.1 million per firm on<br \/>\naverage.<\/p>\n<p>Smaller businesses could pay up to \u00a3311,000 annually to stave off<br \/>\nserious cyber threats, it adds.<\/p>\n<p>Such costs would be required to cover disruption to business,<br \/>\neroded sales, fines, compensation and asset recovery, PwC said.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Vaizey, Britain&#8217;s Digital Economy Minister, said the UK is an<br \/>\n<em>\u201cattractive target\u201d<\/em> for cyber-attacks and the related<br \/>\nfinancial costs are soaring.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe UK\u2019s digital economy is strong and growing, which is why<br \/>\nBritish businesses remain an attractive target for<br \/>\ncyber-attack,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBusinesses that take this threat seriously are not only<br \/>\nprotecting themselves and their customers\u2019 data but securing a<br \/>\ncompetitive advantage.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>PwC\u2019s report suggests while security on regular computer systems<br \/>\nis being dealt with, firms\u2019 increasing reliance on tablets and<br \/>\nsmartphones could leave them vulnerable to attack.<\/p>\n<p>The number of companies that reported security breaches via such<br \/>\ndevices increased more than twofold in 2015, it said.<\/p>\n<p>The research also indicates human error is another factor, which<br \/>\nincreases firms\u2019 vulnerability to attack.<\/p>\n<p>PwC cyber security director Andrew Miller said security breaches<br \/>\nare becoming increasingly costly.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBreaches are becoming increasingly sophisticated, often<br \/>\ninvolving internal staff to amplify their effect, and the impacts<br \/>\nwe are seeing are increasingly long-lasting and costly to deal<br \/>\nwith,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<p>PwC\u2019s research was unveiled at Britain\u2019s Infosecurity conference<br \/>\non Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the event, GCHQ\u2019s director general of cyber security,<br \/>\nCiaran Martin, said it is impossible to construct a <em>\u201ccyber<br \/>\nsecurity umbrella\u201d<\/em> over the nation.<\/p>\n<p>He said the cyber threats UK firms and organizations face<br \/>\n<em>\u201cshow little sign of abating,\u201d<\/em> and generally stem from<br \/>\nhostile states, terror groups and hacktivists.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: initial;\">Martin said he was<br \/>\n<em>\u201cgenuinely surprised\u201d<\/em> by the broad range of<br \/>\norganizations targeted by cyber criminals.<\/span><!-- Go to www.addthis.com\/dashboard to customize your tools --><br \/>\n<!-- Share template --><\/p>\n<p><!-- Go to your Addthis.com Dashboard to update any options --><\/p>\n<p>This piece was reprinted by <a href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\">RINF Alternative News<\/a> with permission or license.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RINF EDITOR&#8217;S NOTE: What&#8217;s next to blame for the state of the British economy?
