{"id":154032,"date":"2015-05-24T16:11:04","date_gmt":"2015-05-24T16:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=154032"},"modified":"2015-05-24T16:11:04","modified_gmt":"2015-05-24T16:11:04","slug":"54-us-officers-charged-fatal-shootings-since-2005-analysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/54-us-officers-charged-fatal-shootings-since-2005-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Only 54 US officers charged in fatal shootings since 2005: Analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"item-text\">\n<p><strong>Only 54 officers have been charged for thousands of fatal shootings at the hands of police across the United States over the past decade, according to a new report.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An analysis by <em>The Washington Post <\/em>and researchers at Bowling Green State University sought to identify, for the first time, every police officer who was charged for fatal shootings since 2005.<\/p>\n<p>What the researchers found represents a tiny fraction of the cases involving a police officer fatally shooting someone while on duty since 2005.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo charge an officer in a fatal shooting, it takes something so egregious, so over the top that it cannot be explained in any rational way,\u201d said Philip M. Stinson, a criminologist at Bowling Green, who studies arrests of police. \u201cIt also has to be a case that prosecutors are willing to hang their reputation on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an overwhelming majority of the cases where an officer was charged, the person killed was unarmed, said the analysis, which was based on a wide range of public records and interviews with law enforcement, judicial and other legal experts.<\/p>\n<p>In cases where charges were made, <em>The Post <\/em>analysis found other factors typically made them exceptional, including, \u201ca victim shot in the back, a video recording of the incident, incriminating testimony from other officers or allegations of a coverup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/Detail\/2015\/05\/24\/412558\/54-police-officers-charged-fatal-shootings-\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Only 54 officers have been charged for thousands of fatal shootings at the hands of police across the United States over the past decade, according to a new report.
