It had previously been passed in the House of<br \/>\nRepresentatives with overwhelming success.<\/p>\n<p>Had lawmakers approved the Freedom Act, the bulk collection of<br \/>\nAmericans\u2019 telephone records, as conducted by the government<br \/>\nunder a controversial interpretation of Section 215 of the<br \/>\nPatriot Act, would have been limited by new restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>\u201cUSA Patriot Act\u201d<\/em> as a whole also fell short of<br \/>\nbeing adopted, with the Senate voting 45-54.
