{"id":153558,"date":"2015-05-22T16:24:32","date_gmt":"2015-05-22T16:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=153558"},"modified":"2015-05-22T16:24:32","modified_gmt":"2015-05-22T16:24:32","slug":"doj-watchdog-barks-fbis-failure-leash-surveillance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/doj-watchdog-barks-fbis-failure-leash-surveillance\/","title":{"rendered":"DoJ watchdog barks at FBI\u2019s failure to leash in surveillance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Bureau of Investigation collects data on individuals not suspected of any crime through a controversial section of the Patriot Act, according to a watchdog report, while the debate on that ability and its supposed strengths rages on.<\/p>\n<p>The report, an analysis of the Federal Bureau of Investigation\u2019s<br \/>\nuse of Sec. 215 of the Patriot Act to acquire so-called business<br \/>\nrecords, was released on Thursday of this week by the DOJ\u2019s<br \/>\nOffice of the Inspector General, and raises concerns over the<br \/>\nFBI\u2019s reluctance to implement changes to the program despite<br \/>\nyears of recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>According to the OIG analysis, the FBI is on track to collect<br \/>\nmore types of records than ever before through its Sec. 215<br \/>\nauthority, notwithstanding concerns over the bureau\u2019s inability<br \/>\nto adopt minimization procedures, and the degree of incidental<br \/>\nsurveillance Americans are increasingly subject to.<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n\u201cThe report notes that the scope of business records sought under<br \/>\nSection 215 greatly expanded in response to legislative changes,<br \/>\ntechnological advances and strategic choices, and that Section<br \/>\n215 orders have been used in investigations of groups comprised<br \/>\nof unknown members and to obtain information in bulk concerning<br \/>\npersons who are not the subjects of or associated with any FBI<br \/>\ninvestigation,\u201d<\/em> reads part of the report\u2019s executive<br \/>\nsummary.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe agents we interviewed did not identify any major case<br \/>\ndevelopments that resulted from use of the records obtained in<br \/>\nresponse to Section 215 orders, but told us that the material<br \/>\nproduced&#8230;was valuable in that it was used to support other<br \/>\ninvestigative requests, develop investigative leads and<br \/>\ncorroborate other information,\u2019\u2019<\/em> the report concluded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/usa\/260981-doj-business-records-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Bureau of Investigation collects data on individuals not suspected of any crime through a controversial section of the Patriot Act, according to a watchdog report, while the debate on that ability and its supposed strengths rages on.
