{"id":150324,"date":"2015-05-11T21:02:04","date_gmt":"2015-05-11T21:02:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=150324"},"modified":"2015-05-11T21:02:04","modified_gmt":"2015-05-11T21:02:04","slug":"harper-government-threatens-bds-supporters-with-hate-crime-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/politics\/harper-government-threatens-bds-supporters-with-hate-crime-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Harper Government Threatens BDS Supporters with Hate Crime Charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"lead\">\n<p><strong>Rights groups say newly revealed policy change is meant to &#8220;scare&#8221; critics of Palestinian oppression<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Lauren McCauley<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2015\/05\/11\/harper-government-threatens-bds-supporters-hate-crime-charges\" target=\"_blank\">Common Dreams<\/a>) &#8211; The Canadian government is threatening to charge those participating in boycotts of Israel with a hate crime, <em>CBC<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/ottawa-considering-hate-charges-against-those-who-boycott-israel-1.3067497\">revealed<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The information came following an attempt by the news agency to obtain clarification on statements made by federal ministers about a &#8220;zero tolerance&#8221; approach to supporters of the international <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bdsmovement.net\/\">Boycott, Divest and Sanction<\/a> (BDS) movement protesting Israeli apartheid and occupation of Palestinian land.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the query, a spokesperson for Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney, who is in charge of federal law enforcement, sent reporters &#8220;a detailed list of Canada&#8217;s updated hate laws, noting that Canada has one of the most comprehensive sets of such laws &#8216;anywhere in the world.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such a move could target a range of civil society organizations, from the United Church of Canada and the Canadian Quakers to campus protest groups and labour unions,&#8221; <em>CBC<\/em>reports. &#8220;If carried out, it would be a remarkably aggressive tactic, and another measure of the Conservative government&#8217;s lockstep support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The government under Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.international.gc.ca\/name-anmo\/peace_process-processus_paix\/canadian_policy-politique_canadienne.aspx?lang=eng\">pledged<\/a> &#8220;steadfast&#8221; support for Israel and last year amended the Criminal Code definition for hate speech to include &#8220;national origin&#8221; as well as race and religion. This, according to Micheal Vonn, an attorney with the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, allows the government to use hate crime laws as &#8220;a tool to go after critics of Israel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And Tyler Levitan, a spokesman for the group Independent Jewish Voices, which supports BDS in Canada, agreed, telling <em>CBC<\/em> that the hate speech policy change is an attempt by the Harper government to silence dissent: &#8220;This is about trying to scare people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As journalist Glenn Greenwald <a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/05\/11\/canadian-covernment-exploiting-charlie-hebdo-attack-threatens-prosecute-advocates-israel-boycott\/\">noted<\/a> in a blog post on Monday, the Canadian government&#8217;s suppression of anti-Israeli sentiment directly contradicts Harper&#8217;s alleged <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2015\/01\/12\/critics-decry-hypocrisy-world-leaders-photo-op-paris\">support for free speech<\/a> following the January 2015 terrorist attack on the French satirical magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/charlie-hebdo\">Charlie Hebdo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When the views being suppressed are ones amenable to those in power (e.g., cartoons mocking Islam), free speech is venerated,&#8221; Greenwald writes. &#8220;But when ideas are advocated that upset those in power (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/03\/17\/whats-scarier-terrorism-governments-unilaterally-blocking-websites-name\/\">speech by Muslims<\/a> critical of western nations and their allies),\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/01\/14\/days-hosting-massive-free-speech-march-france-arrests-comedian-facebook-comments\/\">very same people<\/a> acquiesce to, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/01\/06\/police-increasingly-monitoring-criminalizing-online-speech\/\">or expressly endorse<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/libertycentral\/2012\/mar\/15\/azhar-ahmed-treason-army-facebook-comments\">full-scale suppression<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This piece was reprinted by <a href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\">RINF Alternative News<\/a> with permission or license.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rights groups say newly revealed policy change is meant to &#8220;scare&#8221; critics of Palestinian oppression Lauren McCauley (Common Dreams) &#8211; The Canadian government is threatening to charge those participating in boycotts of Israel with a hate crime, CBC revealed on Monday.
