Hundreds of people felt tremors, registered by the local geological hazard information service as \u201csevere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There were no immediate reports of damage after the initial quake\u00a0struck at 2:29pm local time. The USGS registered the depth of the<br \/>\nquake at 10km.<\/p>\n<p>A second and lighter 3.4 tremor followed about 10 minutes later.\u00a0It was located 20km west of Wanaka at a depth of 11km.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt gave us all a bit of a shock,\u201d<\/em> Wanaka Tourism Office\u00a0general manager James Helmore told Fairfax NZ News, as shaking persisted for some 15\u00a0seconds.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere may be some minor damage in plastering\u201d h<\/em>e said,\u00a0but there was none he could see at that moment.<\/p>\n<p>Local media is also reporting evacuation at the Wanaka Puzzling\u00a0World attraction park.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt was significant, we evacuated quick because we didn&#8217;t\u00a0know whether it was going to get worse,\u201d<\/em> Heidi Landsborough<br \/>\nof Puzzling World said. <em>\u201cIt was a bit difficult because we\u00a0had a few people who thought it was part of the experience.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>GeoNet geohazards information manager Kevin Fenaughty told\u00a0Fairfax NZ News that no structural damage is expected as a result\u00a0of this earthquake.
