Eighteen months later Laura Poitras&#8217; film <em>Citizenfour <\/em>about Snowden was released, and four months after that it won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Another film, this one a biopic directed by Oliver Stone entitled <em>Snowden<\/em>, is due out at the end of this year.<\/p>\n<p>To the chagrin of the authorities and the tech giants, the story has refused to die.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite hugely increased public awareness of intrusions into privacy by government agencies and corporate interests alike, on the surface the situation in the UK seems remarkably unaltered.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.toolsforfreedom.com\/Edward-Snowden-The-Truth-Unveiled-p\/2207.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-147641\" src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/snowden.gif\" alt=\"snowden\" width=\"219\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>&#8220;GCHQ surveillance probably hasn&#8217;t changed at all,&#8221; said Mike Harris, director of campaigning consultancy 89up, one of the UK distributors of<em>Citizenfour<\/em>, at the 44Con Cyber Security event in London this week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And the law hasn&#8217;t been reformed &#8211; in fact the three main parties ganged up to bash though <a title=\"Government surveillance bill passed\" href=\"http:\/\/www.computing.co.uk\/ctg\/news\/2355606\/government-surveillance-bill-passed-438-51-in-the-house-of-commons\" target=\"_blank\">even more Draconian legislation<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, Harris sees a number hopeful signs that many things are moving in a different direction.
