{"id":147407,"date":"2015-04-29T13:05:49","date_gmt":"2015-04-29T13:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=147407"},"modified":"2015-04-29T13:05:49","modified_gmt":"2015-04-29T13:05:49","slug":"investigating-cia-torture-the-bureau-and-the-rendition-project-publish-first-quarterly-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/investigating-cia-torture-the-bureau-and-the-rendition-project-publish-first-quarterly-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Investigating CIA Torture: The Bureau and The Rendition Project publish first quarterly report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An unprecedented picture of the 119 individuals secretly detained and tortured by the CIA as part of the US\u2019s war on terror has been published following\u00a0new research by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and <a title=\"TRP\" href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Rendition Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis, which is summarised in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebureauinvestigates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/complete-v12.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">our first quarterly report<\/a>, reveals 101 of the detainees were held by the CIA for more than a month, and 47 of these for more than a year. All detainees were held without access to lawyers, their families or the International Committee of the Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p>The names of the 119 were published last December in a <a title=\"SSCI report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.intelligence.senate.gov\/study2014\/sscistudy1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">damning report<\/a> by the US Senate Intelligence Committee on the CIA\u2019s detention and interrogation programme.<\/p>\n<p>All 119 were held by the CIA at some point between 2002 and 2008 in at least ten secret prisons \u2014 known as \u201cblack sites\u201d \u2014 which were scattered across the world<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau and The Rendition Project\u00a0launched a <a title=\"TBIJ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thebureauinvestigates.com\/category\/projects\/cia-torture\/\" target=\"_blank\">joint investigation<\/a> in January to examine the CIA\u2019s actions and find out what happened to the people they held.\u00a0The Bureau\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cr0ft0n\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Crofton Black<\/a>\u00a0has written the investigation\u2019s first quarterly report on the findings <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebureauinvestigates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/complete-v12.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/strong>.
