An initiative proposed by a religious conservative group Friday in California would ban transgender people from using single-sex facilities in government buildings that correspond with their gender identity, Buzzfeed News reports.<\/p>\n
The proposed law requires people to use facilities such as restrooms, showers, dressing rooms, and locker rooms in all government buildings \u201cin accordance with their biological sex,\u201d effectively banning transgender people to use these facilities that correspond to their gender. A \u201cviolation\u201d could result in a penalty of at least\u00a0$4,000.<\/p>\n
Although the ban only applies to facilities in government buildings, including public schools and universities, the proposed law would protect private businesses from litigations if they enforce similar bans. The initiative, titled \u201cPersonal Privacy Protection Act,\u201d claims that the ban is proposed to \u201cpreserve fundamental interests in privacy,\u201d and \u201cmaintain public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, Buzzfeed\u2019s Dominic Holden calls it a \u201cbacklash against recent and significant gains by the LGBT-rights movement.\u201d There has been pushback from LGBT rights advocates. ACLU\u2019s Kris Hayashi calls it \u201cbathroom police.\u201d<\/p>\n
