During the past few days, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko has been drawing Ukraine’s racist fascists, or nazis, such as Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Oleh Kolomoysky, to support him; he has publicly threatened them if they fail to get in line behind his authority. I had opened a previous version of this report, “To understand the recent signs that are pointing toward a final settlement of Ukraine\u2019s civil war, this war\u2019s background must first be summarized”; and the historical summary here is indeed necessary for understanding what’s happening, but the outcome that it now seems to be heading toward is not nearly so optimistic: It is, instead, a more unified Ukrainian government, re-invading its former Donbass region, this time with U.S. Abrams tanks and other tools of invasion. The reason for that reassessment is this:<\/p>\n

Petro Poroshenko became elected as Ukraine\u2019s President on 25 May 2014, in an election that was held virtually only in the anti-Russian northwestern half of Ukraine.<\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

That’s the area which had not voted for his predecessor, Viktor Yanukovych, in Ukraine\u2019s last, 2010, election \u2013 the man who was\u00a0violently overthrown<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on 22 February 2014, in what the head of Stratfor, the \u2018private CIA\u2019 firm, has called\u00a0\u201cthe most blatant coup in history.\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Before Poroshenko became elected, however, the region in the far east bordering Russia, Donbass, had broken away from Ukraine, and its residents were dubbed by the post-coup government as \u2019terrorists,\u2019 for rejecting their rule. That region had voted 90% for Yanukovych, the man who had been overthrown in the coup.<\/span><\/a> This new Ukrainian government invaded Donbass, using bombers, tanks, rocket-launchers, and everything it had<\/span><\/a>; and, when Poroshenko gave his victory speech on May 25th, he\u00a0promised<\/span><\/a>, and it was very clear from him, that:\u00a0“The anti-terrorist operation cannot and should not last two or three months. It should and will last hours.\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Another translation of it was\u00a0“Antiterrorist operation can not and will not continue for 2-3 months. It must and will last hours.\u201d<\/span><\/a>) But it did<\/i> last months \u2013 Poroshenko\u2019s prediction was certainly false; and, moreover, he lost first one round of the war, and then another \u2013 his prediction of its outcome was likewise false.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quickly, the hard-line anti-Russian leaders in Ukraine started talking about overthrowing Poroshenko. One of them was Ihor Kolomoysky, a billionaire governor of one of Ukraine\u2019s regions, who had been appointed by Oleksandr Turchynov, who had been appointed by Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who had been appointed by Victoria Nuland, who had been appointed by Barack Obama. Kolomoysky also had hired Joe Biden\u2019s son Hunter Biden to the board of one of his companies. So, Kolomoysky was connected directly to Obama. By contrast, Poroshenko was not, at all \u2013 he had been elected, by the residents in the now-rump Ukraine. Poroshenko wasn\u2019t appointed by anybody.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kolomoysky\u00a0said<\/span><\/a>, as early as 21 June 2014 (when the first round of Poroshenko\u2019s war was lost), “I’ll never obey Poroshenko,\u201d and “My private army will finish off the separatists.\u201d He was saying that he would achieve what Poroshenko and Ukraine\u2019s regular army could not. Kolomoysky\u2019s faction in Ukraine\u2019s parliament is almost as influential as is Poroshenko\u2019s. Moreover,\u00a0on December 2nd, all three of the far-right parliamentary factions (including Kolomoysky\u2019s) joined together in an alliance whose aim was specifically to remove Poroshenko.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

By this time, Poroshenko, now the loser of two rounds of this war, was the leader of the Ukrainian government\u2019s moderate or peace faction. The leader of the war faction is still Arseniy Yatsenyuk<\/span><\/a>, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, the man who\u00a0had been appointed on 4 February 2014 (18 days before the coup) by Victoria Nuland<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of the U.S. State Department. Whereas Yatsenyuk was directly beholden to Obama, Poroshenko was not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s Angela Merkel and France\u2019s Francois Hollande, as well as several other EU leaders, wanted the war to end at this point<\/span><\/a>, but America\u2019s Barack Obama still did not; he wanted yet another, third, round of the war, just as did Yatsenyuk and the other hard-line anti-Russians. So: Merkel and Hollande decided to fly to Moscow and negotiate on their own with Russia\u2019s Vladimir Putin; and,\u00a0on February 7th, they announced agreement on a plan,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with or without the U.S. President. Though Obama had previously said that he would send weapons to Ukraine, he now said that he would place on hold his decision about sending weapons, so as not to obstruct the efforts of those EU leaders \u2013 not embarrass and antagonize leaders whose cooperation he was seeking.<\/span><\/p>\n

A peace-summit was then held at\u00a0Minsk\u00a0on February 11th, attended by Merkel, Hollande, Putin, and Poroshenko; and it resulted in the signing of a new package of peacemaking measures, called\u00a0Minsk II, on February 12th.<\/span><\/p>\n

The big question, since then, has been whether the United States would press on with its arming of Ukraine. Would Obama support Yatsenyuk, whom his own person Victoria Nuland had selected to run the country? Or would he instead switch now to support Poroshenko \u2013 whom he had never chosen?<\/span><\/p>\n

The first big shoe to fall was on\u00a0March 19th,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0when Poroshenko removed Kolomoysky from control of a company whose majority owner is the Ukrainian government, and when Kolomoysky sent some of his toughs into its headquarters in order to seize back control of it, and when the American Ambassador to Ukraine \u2013 the very same person who had carried out Victoria Nuland\u2019s appointment of Yatsenyuk to become Ukraine\u2019s Prime Minister \u2013 publicly reprimanded Kolomoysky for that action. The U.S. White House, which had selected Yatsenyuk, who then indirectly selected Kolomoysky, was now publicly renouncing Kolomoysky. This was huge.\u00a0<\/span>(Subsequently, on March 25th, Poroshenko removed Kolomoysky from the governorship to which Yatsenyuk \u2013 via Turchynov \u2013 had originally appointed him.)<\/p>\n

The second big shoe to drop was on March 23rd, when, as announced in a headline, “Ukrainian\u00a0Parliament\u00a0May\u00a0Check\u00a0Yatsenyuk\u00a0for\u00a0Corruption.\u201d<\/span><\/a> It reported: “MP Sergei Kaplin, a member of the largest faction in the Ukrainian\u00a0parliament \u2013 ‘Petro Poroshenko Bloc’ \u2013 suggested creating a special\u00a0commission in Verkhovna Rada \u2014 Ukraine\u2019s Parliament \u2014 to investigate the\u00a0activities of the current Prime\u00a0Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who was\u00a0accused of concealing corruption schemes.\u201d In other words: Poroshenko has Obama\u2019s approval to get rid of Yatsenyuk \u2013 who had previously been Obama\u2019s man. Poroshenko is now free to follow through with the Merkel-Hollande peace-plan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apparently, Obama, who had started this war<\/span><\/a>, has finally given up on pursuing it any further, because doing so would split the Western alliance. But if those Abrams tanks really have been sent to Ukraine, then that’s not true, and the likeliest scenario is that April or May will see a re-invasion of Donbass. The purpose of Poroshenko’s (and Obama’s) getting unified nazi support behind Poroshenko will be in order to increase the likelihood of success in this third Ukrainian invasion of Donbass.<\/span><\/p>\n

The reason why I hadn’t considered this scenario previously, is that it will expedite the end of the Western Alliance. Hard as it is for me to believe that Obama would be willing to do that, this is what he is doing if he has sent Abrams tanks to Ukraine. Merkel, Hollande, and others, worked very hard to get the Minsk II agreement done. Apparently, Obama is willing to trash it.<\/p>\n
