{"id":143768,"date":"2015-02-23T19:00:43","date_gmt":"2015-02-23T19:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=143768"},"modified":"2015-02-23T19:00:43","modified_gmt":"2015-02-23T19:00:43","slug":"one-third-america-brink-financial-disaster-survey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/money\/one-third-america-brink-financial-disaster-survey\/","title":{"rendered":"One-third of America on the brink of financial disaster \u2014 survey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty-seven percent of Americans have credit card debt that equals or is greater than their emergency savings, according to a new survey, leaving them \u201cteetering on the edge of financial disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bankrate.com\/finance\/consumer-index\/credit-card-debt-still-a-big-concern.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">poll<\/a> of more than 1,000 adults in the United States by Bankrate.com found that about 24 percent of Americans have more credit card debt than emergency savings, while another 13 percent have neither credit card debt nor emergency savings.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNot only do most of them not have enough savings, they\u2019ve all used up some portion of their available credit \u2013 they are running out of options,\u201d<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.marketwatch.com\/story\/1-in-3-americans-on-verge-of-financial-ruin-2015-02-23\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Greg McBride, Bankrate.com\u2019s chief financial analyst.<\/p>\n<p>The 30 to 49 age group are in the most peril, with 32 percent of respondents reporting that they have credit card debt higher than their emergency savings. Twenty-five percent of those aged between 50 to 64 said the same, as did 21 percent in the 18 to 29 age bracket and 14 percent of those 65 and up.<\/p>\n<p>As a 2014 survey by American Express <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wdaz.com\/news\/3647521-unexpected-expenses-failure-plan-unforeseen-costs-can-hurt-household-budget-lead\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>, emergencies are more frequent than many would like to think. Half of Americans who responded to the survey had to deal with a fairly major unforeseen or emergency expense in the past year.
