Missouri Governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency on Monday. He authorized the National Guard to assist police in Ferguson ahead of the grand jury\u2019s decision on whether or not to charge police officer Darren Wilson for the murder of 18-year-old Michael Brown.<\/p>\n<p>Less than a week ago, Nixon announced that law enforcement is well prepared for protests in Ferguson if Wilson walks free. He said, \u201cViolence will not be tolerated\u201d\u2013but he wasn\u2019t referencing police violence. Instead, since Brown was murdered in August, St. Louis County police has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2014\/oct\/28\/ferguson-police-spending-thousands-riot-gear-protests\">spent<\/a> $172,669 on tear gas, rubber bullets and other equipment meant to harm protesters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see them preparing for war,\u201d said Mervyn Marcano, spokesperson for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.organizemo.org\/\">Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment<\/a> (MORE), a social justice organization, who is from Oakland, California, and now lives in Ferguson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t see any interest from them in shifting the relationship between police and the communities that they serve,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Police Prepare for War<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ferguson community has very little faith that prosecutor Robert P. McCulloch will indict Wilson, Marcano said. And it\u2019s doubtful that newly release evidence on Wilson will be taken into account.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6wAkbovfTeA\">video<\/a> published Friday, Wilson is seen threatening a man and saying he will \u201clock [his] ass up\u201d for filming him. Wilson then proceeded to arrest him, which is illegal. Also on Friday, the <em>St. Louis Post-Dispatch<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/multimedia\/special\/darren-wilson-s-radio-calls-show-fatal-encounter-was-brief\/html_79c17aed-0dbe-514d-ba32-bad908056790.html\">released<\/a> surveillance footage of Wilson heading to the hospital, which seems to <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/ferguson-videos-show-darren-wilson-fatally-shooting-michael\/story?id=26936378\">contradict<\/a> police\u2019s claims that Wilson was severely injured.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/activism\/ferguson-organizer-police-are-preparing-war\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alyssa Figueroa \u2018We don\u2019t see any interest from police in shifting their relationship with the communities they serve.\u2019 So it begins.
