{"id":140925,"date":"2014-10-17T22:43:42","date_gmt":"2014-10-17T22:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=140925"},"modified":"2014-10-17T22:43:42","modified_gmt":"2014-10-17T22:43:42","slug":"monsanto-spends-millions-bid-defeat-local-gmo-labeling-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/sicence-technology\/monsanto-spends-millions-bid-defeat-local-gmo-labeling-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Monsanto Spends Millions in Bid to Defeat Local GMO Labeling Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>This is not the first time the biotech giant has funneled millions into efforts to defeat labeling laws<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sarah Lazare<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Monsanto, the largest genetically-modified seed corporation in the world, has so far spent over $4 million in a bid to crush an Oregon <a href=\"http:\/\/oregonrighttoknow.org\/read-the-initiative\/\">initiative<\/a>, up for vote in November, to mandate the labeling of genetically engineered food.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.sos.state.or.us\/orestar\/gotoPublicTransactionDetail.do?tranRsn=1872149\">Records<\/a> from the Oregon Secretary of State&#8217;s office show that the company, on October 8, made a contribution of $2.5 million to opponents of the bill, bringing the company&#8217;s total contributions to $4,085,150.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative\u2013ballot measure 92\u2013would require manufacturers and retailers to label &#8220;genetically engineered raw and packaged food.&#8221; Backers of the provision say that Oregonians &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/oregonrighttoknow.org\/news\/eugene-register-guard-endorses-measure-92\/\">have the right to know<\/a>&#8221; what is in their food.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time Monsanto has poured its funds into efforts to crush such measures.
