{"id":138604,"date":"2014-08-31T17:36:24","date_gmt":"2014-08-31T17:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=138604"},"modified":"2014-09-01T12:29:31","modified_gmt":"2014-09-01T12:29:31","slug":"g4s-guantanamo-contract-breaches-uk-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/latest-news\/g4s-guantanamo-contract-breaches-uk-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"G4S Guantanamo contract \u2018breaches UK policy\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #505050;\">The government is being asked to take action against British firm G4S, after it emerged the company has won a \u00a371m contract to provide a range of \u2018base support\u2019 services at Guant\u00c3\u00a1namo Bay.<\/span><br style=\"color: #505050;\" \/><span style=\"color: #505050;\">\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"color: #505050;\" \/><span style=\"color: #505050;\">Legal charity Reprieve, which assists Guant\u00c3\u00a1namo prisoners such as British resident Shaker Aamer, has submitted a dossier of evidence to the UK\u2019s responsible business watchdog, the National Contact Point for the OECD Guidelines (UK NCP). The submission argues that by providing \u2018essential\u2019 services at the prison, G4S will be contravening British government policy that the prison must be closed, as well as the OECD\u2019s guidelines for responsible business conduct.<\/span><br style=\"color: #505050;\" \/><span style=\"color: #505050;\">\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"color: #505050;\" \/><span style=\"color: #505050;\">Support services form an important part of a complex regime of mistreatment at Guant\u00c3\u00a1namo, and the broad scope of the G4S contract \u2014 which includes \u2018vehicles\u2019, \u2018custodial\u2019, and \u2018limited facilities support\u2019 \u2014 has raised concerns that G4S will be directly complicit in abuses such as force-feeding.<\/span><br style=\"color: #505050;\" \/><span style=\"color: #505050;\">\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"color: #505050;\" \/><span style=\"color: #505050;\">Last week, several detainees protesting their detention without charge alerted their Reprieve lawyers to a new crackdown by the Guant\u00c3\u00a1namo authorities. Mr Aamer was reportedly beaten, while another detainee\u2019s hand was broken.<\/span><br style=\"color: #505050;\" \/><span style=\"color: #505050;\">\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"color: #505050;\" \/><span style=\"color: #505050;\">The British government maintains that the prison must close, and that Mr Aamer should be returned home to London. Prime Minister David Cameron has said that Guant\u00c3\u00a1namo \u201chas actually helped to radicalise people and make our country and our world less safe\u201d, while elsewhere the prison has been called \u201ca shocking affront to democracy.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #505050;\" \/><span style=\"color: #505050;\">\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"color: #505050;\" \/><strong style=\"color: #505050;\">Kevin Lo, Reprieve investigator,<\/strong><span style=\"color: #505050;\">\u00a0said: \u201cSerious abuses are happening every day at Guantanamo Bay, supported by the most innocuous-sounding services. G4S needs to be much clearer about what it will be providing to the prison under this very broad contract. Will G4S vehicles be transporting force-feeding supplements, restraint chairs \u2014 even detainees?
