{"id":137982,"date":"2014-08-22T15:14:09","date_gmt":"2014-08-22T15:14:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=137982"},"modified":"2014-08-22T15:18:18","modified_gmt":"2014-08-22T15:18:18","slug":"mandatory-fingerprinting-venezuelan-supermarkets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/mandatory-fingerprinting-venezuelan-supermarkets\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandatory Fingerprinting In Venezuelan Supermarkets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\" target=\"_blank\"><em>RINF Alternative News<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today the BBC reported that\u00a0Venezuela&#8217;s president\u00a0Nicolas Maduro plans to introduce a mandatory fingerprinting system in supermarkets across the country, as part of an effort to prevent food shortages and smuggling.<\/p>\n<p>In a televised address on Wednesday, Maduro said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are creating a biometric system \u2026 to function in all distribution and retail systems, public and private.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will be \u2014 like the fingerprint scan we use in our electoral system \u2014 a perfect anti-fraud system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the BBC:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Opposition in Venezuela rejected the plan, saying the policy treated all Venezuelans as thieves.<\/p>\n<p>Critics said fingerprinting consumers of staple products was tantamount to rationing and constituted a breach of privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Up to 40% of the goods which Venezuela subsidises for its domestic market are smuggled to Colombia, where they are sold at much higher prices, the authorities say.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-28891292\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #252525;\">However this could be an attempt by the Western media to dig up anti-Venezuelan sentiment as just like his predecessor, Hugo Chavez,\u00a0Nicolas\u00a0<\/span>Maduro has long been a critic of Western foreign policies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #252525;\">During\u00a0his acceptance speech at\u00a0the presidential\u00a0ceremony he stated: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #252525;\">&#8220;Compatriots, I am not here out of personal ambition, out of vanity, or because my surname Maduro is a part of the rancid\u00a0<\/span>oligarchy<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0of this country.
