Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0a Wikipedia message said.<em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block,\u201d<\/em>administrator Tom Morris told Congress on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The ban follows an existing one-day ban that was imposed earlier this month in reactoin to the Mediaite incident referenced by Morris. IPs originating from Congress computers were found to have edited Mediaite&#8217;s description to a\u00a0<em>\u201csexist transphobic news and opinion blog\u201d<\/em>\u00a0that\u00a0<em>\u201cautomatically assumes that someone is male without any evidence.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPlease refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did at Mediaite. Your edits appear to constitute vandalism and have been reverted or removed,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0wrote yeoman editor &#8216;WineGuy.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>One Washington staffer protested that they were all being banned for the\u00a0<em>\u201cactions of two or three.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOut of over 9,000 staffers in the House, should we really be banning this whole IP range,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said, adding that some of them were just making grammatical edits or\u00a0<em>\u201cadding information about birds in Omsk.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The first set of controversial edits was exposed by @congressedits, a Twitter bot that monitors anonymous edits made from congressional IP addresses. Though the account was only created a fortnight ago, it already has 23,400 followers.<\/p>\n<p>Only anonymous edits from the IP address 143.231.249.138 have been banned; users with their own accounts are still free to make edits.<\/p>\n<p>One said that he wouldn\u2019t sign in with his password at work.\u00a0<em>&#8220;Theoretically people could find out who I am, but good luck, I&#8217;m behind seven proxies,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the user wrote, referencing an ongoing internet meme.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #044faa;\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/news\/173528-us-congress-edit-wikipedia\/\" target=\"_blank\">Previous changes<\/a>\u00a0made from the same IP address included one to the page of RT\u2019s Abby Martin. On July 14, an edit by a member of congressional staff changed\u00a0<em>\u201cAmerican journalist\u201d<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0<em>\u201cRussian propagandist.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another target of a congressional editor was the article about Crimea.
