{"id":131916,"date":"2014-07-20T17:16:32","date_gmt":"2014-07-20T17:16:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=131916"},"modified":"2014-07-20T17:30:19","modified_gmt":"2014-07-20T17:30:19","slug":"police-stockpiling-weapons-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/latest-news\/police-stockpiling-weapons-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Police Stockpiling Weapons Of War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>NASHVILLE, Tenn.<\/i>\u00a0&#8212; A massive military build-up is underway right here in Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Local law enforcement agencies are snatching up huge amounts of weapons &#8212; from the Department of Defense &#8212; used in fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Items include grenade launchers, mine-resistant vehicles and guns that have been deemed as surplus by the Pentagon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The equipment is cheap or free for local law enforcement agencies to acquire.<\/p>\n<p>The federal program has fueled a debate about the militarization of our police departments.<\/p>\n<p>McMinn County is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. \u00a0It boasts beautiful scenery, but its sheriff&#8217;s department can boast something else.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The department received more military surplus guns than any other local department in the state last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We actually reconfigured the whole armory to accommodate all of this,&#8221; said Sheriff Joe Guy.<\/p>\n<p><script type='text\/javascript' src='http:\/\/WTVF.images.worldnow.com\/interface\/js\/WNVideo.js?rnd=680461;hostDomain=www.newschannel5.com;playerWidth=630;playerHeight=385;isShowIcon=true;clipId=10378048;flvUri=;partnerclipid=;adTag=News;advertisingZone=;enableAds=true;landingPage=;islandingPageoverride=false;playerType=STANDARD_EMBEDDEDscript;controlsType=fixed'><\/script><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newschannel5.com\" title=\"NewsChannel5.com | Nashville News, Weather \">NewsChannel5.com | Nashville News, Weather <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sheriff Guy oversees 31 officers and investigators, but his department received 161 army rifles and pistols, including 71 M16 rifles and 71 .45-caliber pistols.<\/p>\n<p><i>NewsChannel 5 Investigates<\/i>\u00a0asked, &#8220;Why does your department need all these guns?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff Guy responded, &#8220;Well, we don&#8217;t need this many. \u00a0There was a little error in the order.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Sheriff said the Army surplus program doubled his initial order, but he hasn&#8217;t sent the guns back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newschannel5.com\/story\/26048414\/local-police-stockpile-weapons-of-war\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NASHVILLE, Tenn.\u00a0&#8212; A massive military build-up is underway right here in Tennessee.
