The animals included three eagles, one bald and two golden,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0c739e;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.care2.com\/http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/midwest\/eagle\/protect\/laws.html\" target=\"_blank\">which are protected<\/a>\u00a0under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Also killed were 75,326 coyotes; 345 mountain lions; 321 wolves, including one very rare\u00a0Mexican gray wolf; 603 monkeys; 6,498 vultures; 10,486 mynas, a type of starling; and 37 frogs, among many others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">How can this be?<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">On the one hand, we have the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0c739e;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.care2.com\/causes\/is-the-endangered-species-act-endangered.html\" target=\"_blank\">Endangered Species Act<\/a>, signed into law in 1973 by President Richard Nixon who, in one of his finer moments,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0c739e;\" href=\"http:\/\/billingsgazette.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/montana\/endangered-species-act-s-th-anniversary-draws-celebration-critics\/article_8ceb9bf3-3ddf-5bde-8ba7-dfb6ab99cdb6.html?print=true&amp;cid=print\">declared<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cNothing is more priceless and more worthy of preservation than the rich array of animal life with which our country has been blessed. It is a many-faceted treasure, of value to scholars, scientists and nature lovers alike, and it forms a vital part of the heritage we all share as Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The Act has been responsible for saving numerous species from becoming extinct.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">On the other hand, there\u2019s a program called Wildlife Services, which falls under the USDA agency Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), and is tasked with managing invasive species and handling wildlife when it interferes with human activities like agriculture and property threats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWildlife Services\u201d has a positive ring to it, but perhaps its former name, \u201cAnimal Damage Control,\u201d is a more accurate description.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.care2.com\/causes\/u-s-government-killed-4-3-million-animals-in-2013.html\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Judy Molland The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)\u00a0murdered 4.3 million wild animals, of which 2 million were native species, in fiscal year 2013.
