{"id":126021,"date":"2014-06-25T16:21:10","date_gmt":"2014-06-25T16:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=126021"},"modified":"2014-06-25T16:21:10","modified_gmt":"2014-06-25T16:21:10","slug":"thousands-angry-tax-workers-walk-cuts-hmrc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/thousands-angry-tax-workers-walk-cuts-hmrc\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands of angry tax workers walk out against the cuts in HMRC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Annette Mackin<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thousands of tax workers in the PCS union are walking out this week\u00a0in a series of 24 hour regional strikes.\u00a0Workers in the\u00a0London, South East and South West regions walked out this morning, Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>They are angry over a number of attacks by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) bosses\u2013not least the devastating job cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Staff numbers have fallen from 104,000 in 2005 to a projected 60,000 next year. And there are plans to slash a further 22,000 jobs on top of this.<\/p>\n<p>As well as throwing workers into unemployment, this makes it harder to chase down rich tax avoiders.<\/p>\n<p>Mark was on the picket lead at HMRC headquarters in central\u00a0London. He told Socialist Worker, \u201cThe cuts will lead to backlogs, and then there will be even less staff left to pick up the workload.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Workers are also striking over the performance management system, through which they can be disciplined if they don\u2019t meet targets.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"crosshead\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Bombarded<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As Tory David Gauke, Exchequer secretary to the Treasury, walked into his office at HMRC HQ he was bombarded by shouts of \u201cStop performance management!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dan Ingreji, PCS branch secretary at HMRC HQ, told Socialist Worker, \u201cThe performance management system is discriminatory. There\u2019s evidence it targets women and ethnic minorities more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark added, \u201cPerformance management creates a huge amount of stress and has caused depression in some workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PCS members are also being balloted over whether to join other workers on 10 July in a strike over pay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope that the strike in tax this week will help boost the turnout and raise awareness of the current ballot,\u201d said Mark.
