{"id":123669,"date":"2014-06-10T14:26:33","date_gmt":"2014-06-10T14:26:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=123669"},"modified":"2014-06-10T14:26:54","modified_gmt":"2014-06-10T14:26:54","slug":"ignored-pre-911-warning-spying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/911-truth\/ignored-pre-911-warning-spying\/","title":{"rendered":"An Ignored Pre-9\/11 Warning on Spying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #444444;\"><em>Arjen Kamphuis<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">In the first 21 months of the Twenty-first\u00a0Century, the dot-com stock bubble burst and then the 9\/11 attacks propelled the United States into the \u201cglobal war on terror.\u201d Yet, between those two events a largely forgotten\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0089c4;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/sides\/getDoc.do?pubRef=-\/\/EP\/\/TEXT+REPORT+A5-2001-0264+0+DOC+XML+V0\/\/EN#title2\">report<\/a>\u00a0to the European Parliament was issued on July 11, 2001, describing the scale and impact of electronic espionage in Europe by the U.S. and its \u201cEchelon\u201d partners (Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand).<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">Speculation about this surveillance network had existed for years but it wasn\u2019t until 1999 when a journalist published a report on the topic that the danger began to be taken seriously. That gave rise to the parliamentary report which \u2014 besides offering a detailed analysis of the problem \u2014 urged European governments to inform their citizens about Echelon and\u00a0provided concrete examples of policies that Europe could take to significantly limit foreign intelligence spying.<\/p>\n<p>Under the heading, \u201cMeasures to encourage self-protection by citizens and enterprises,\u201d the report suggested improved data security and confidentiality for communications by EU citizens.
