{"id":122118,"date":"2014-06-01T16:01:33","date_gmt":"2014-06-01T16:01:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=122118"},"modified":"2014-06-01T16:01:33","modified_gmt":"2014-06-01T16:01:33","slug":"nsa-gathering-millions-images-facial-recognition-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/nsa-gathering-millions-images-facial-recognition-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"NSA Gathering Millions of Images for Facial Recognition Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"subtitle\" style=\"color: #000000;\">New York Times report shows spy agency obtains images from social media, text messages, and emails<\/h3>\n<p><em>Sarah Lazare<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #121212;\">The National Security Agency is mass collecting facial images through its surveillance programs for use in facial recognition technology, journalists James Risen and Laura Poitras\u00a0<a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/06\/01\/us\/nsa-collecting-millions-of-faces-from-web-images.html\">revealed this week in the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #121212;\">Secret documents exposed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden reveal that the spy agency views facial recognition as the next frontier of surveillance and uses new software technology to obtain facial images from digital communications, including emails, social media, and even text messages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #121212;\">According to the report, documents from 2011 reveal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The agency intercepts &#8220;millions of images per day&#8221; \u2013 including about 55,000 &#8216;facial recognition quality images&#8217; \u2013 which translate into &#8220;tremendous untapped potential.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #121212;\">One internal NSA document, dated 2010, states, \u201cIt\u2019s not just the traditional communications we\u2019re after: It\u2019s taking a full-arsenal approach that digitally exploits the clues a target leaves behind in their regular activities on the net to compile biographic and biometric information\u201d that can help \u201cimplement precision targeting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #121212;\">According to the report, the &#8220;accelerated its use of facial recognition technology under the Obama administration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #121212;\">It is not immediately clear how many people have had their images intercepted by the NSA, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #121212;\">However, this agency is not the only one increasingly using this new technology.
