Their own success, they would insist, derives from good character and a strict work ethic. But they would be missing some of the facts. Ample evidence exists to show a correlation between wealth and unethical behavior, and between wealth and a lack of empathy for others, and between wealth and unproductiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #121212;\">The poor, along with a middle class that is sinking toward them, make up the American meritocracy. Here is some of the evidence.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><b style=\"color: #121212;\">1. The Poor Don&#8217;t Cheat As Much<\/b><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">An\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2012\/02\/21\/1118373109.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">analysis<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0of seven different psychological studies found that &#8220;upper-class individuals behave more unethically than lower-class individuals.&#8221; A series of experiments showed that upper-class individuals were more likely to break traffic laws, take valued goods from others, lie in a negotiation, and cheat to increase their chances of winning a prize.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">And this doesn&#8217;t even begin to examine the many, many significant<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.truth-out.org\/buzzflash\/commentary\/the-meritocracy-myth-how-the-super-rich-really-make-their-money\/18605-the-meritocracy-myth-how-the-super-rich-really-make-their-money\" target=\"_blank\">cases<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0of fraudulent behavior in the banking industry. Or private equity firms that cheat their investors over\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sec.gov\/News\/Speech\/Detail\/Speech\/1370541735361#.U3eOmHbyTwM\" target=\"_blank\">50 percent<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0of the time. Or the many unscrupulous corporate\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationofchange.org\/four-contemptible-examples-corporate-tax-avoidance-1373297031\" target=\"_blank\">tax avoidance<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">strategies.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><b style=\"color: #121212;\">2. The Poor Care More About Other People<\/b><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">Numerous reputable\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20649364\" target=\"_blank\">sources<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0have concluded that lower class individuals tend to be more generous and trusting and helpful, compared to the upper class. As people gain in wealth, they\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologicalscience.org\/index.php\/news\/releases\/social-class-as-culture.html\" target=\"_blank\">depend<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0less on others, and thus they have\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article.cfm?id=how-wealth-reduces-compassion\" target=\"_blank\">less reason<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0to understand the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22148992\" target=\"_blank\">feelings<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0and needs of the less fortunate. The poor are better at\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/10\/05\/rich-people-just-care-less\/?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">interpersonal<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0relationships because they need other people.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">In addition, careful studies have determined that money pushes people further to the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/faculty.wcas.northwestern.edu\/~jnd260\/cab\/CAB2012%20-%20Page1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">right<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">, making them\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.voxeu.org\/article\/money-makes-people-right-wing-and-inegalitarian\" target=\"_blank\">less egalitarian<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">, and less willing, as a practical consequence, to provide broad<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/faculty.wcas.northwestern.edu\/~jnd260\/cab\/CAB2012%20-%20Page1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">educational opportunities<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0to all members of society.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">One neuro-imaging\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3825032\/\" target=\"_blank\">analysis<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0even suggested that the super-wealthy view photos of impoverished people as\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/28\/opinion\/kristof-where-is-the-love.html?smid=tw-share&amp;_r=1&amp;\" target=\"_blank\"><i>things<\/i><\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0rather than as human beings. They react to the poor not with sympathy, but with contempt.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><b style=\"color: #121212;\">3. The Rich Focus on Me, Me, Me<\/b><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">The authors of a recent psychological\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologicalscience.org\/index.php\/news\/releases\/social-class-as-culture.html\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0argue that rich people are different because they have the\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"color: #121212;\"><i>freedom<\/i><\/b><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0to focus on\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"color: #121212;\"><i>self<\/i><\/b><span style=\"color: #121212;\">. In support of this, a number of\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/psp.sagepub.com\/content\/early\/2013\/08\/19\/0146167213501699.full#aff-1\" target=\"_blank\">studies<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0have demonstrated that higher social class is associated with increased\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2012-02-27\/wealthier-people-more-likely-than-poorer-to-lie-or-cheat-researchers-find.html\" target=\"_blank\">narcissism<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">, even to the point of looking at themselves more frequently in a mirror. The rich feel entitled. They\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/billmoyers.com\/2014\/01\/13\/why-the-wealthy-favor-harsh-punishment-for-criminals-and-errant-schoolchildren\/\" target=\"_blank\">attribute<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0success to their &#8216;superior&#8217; traits, while people from lower economic backgrounds attribute success to societal values, such as educational opportunities.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><b style=\"color: #121212;\">4. The Poor Give a Greater Percentage of Their Money to Others<\/b><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">Research has shown that low-income Americans spend a much higher percentage of their income on charitable giving.\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2013\/04\/why-the-rich-dont-give\/309254\/\" target=\"_blank\">Results<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/22\/magazine\/22FOB-wwln-t.html\" target=\"_blank\">three<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/savings-account\/does-wealth-create-greed\/\" target=\"_blank\">studies<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0average out to 4.5% from low-income people, 2.7% from those with high incomes. With respect to helping people in need, the rich give even less. As Robert Reich\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationofchange.org\/when-charity-begins-home-particularly-homes-wealthy-1386947218\" target=\"_blank\">notes<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">, about\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.philanthropy.iupui.edu\/files\/research\/giving_focused_on_meeting_needs_of_the_poor_july_2007.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">two-thirds<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0of &#8216;charitable&#8217; donations from the rich go to their foundations and alma maters, and to &#8220;culture palaces&#8221; \u2014 operas, art museums, symphonies, and theaters.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">Charles Koch said, &#8220;I believe my business and non-profit investments are much more beneficial to societal well-being than sending more money to Washington.&#8221; The well-being of<\/span><i style=\"color: #121212;\">high society<\/i><span style=\"color: #121212;\">, perhaps.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><b style=\"color: #121212;\">5. Entrepreneurs are in the (Sinking) Middle Class<\/b><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">The meritorious behavior of job creation comes from the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/2012\/05\/pdf\/middleclass_growth.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">middle class<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">, which is quickly\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eoionline.org\/blog\/how-the-great-recession-cratered-americas-middle-class\/\" target=\"_blank\">sliding<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">toward lower-income status. The very rich generally don&#8217;t risk their money in job-creating startup businesses.\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/articles.marketwatch.com\/2011-06-24\/commentary\/30753798_1_hedge-fund-assets-total-wealth\" target=\"_blank\">Over 90% of the assets<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0owned by millionaires are held in a combination of low-risk investments (bonds and cash), the stock market, and real estate.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">With the demise of the middle class,\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"color: #121212;\"><i>entrepreneurship is decreasing<\/i><\/b><span style=\"color: #121212;\">. According to a Brookings Institute\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/~\/media\/research\/files\/papers\/2014\/05\/declining%20business%20dynamism%20litan\/declining_business_dynamism_hathaway_litan\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">, the &#8220;firm entry rate,&#8221; a measure of new firms and thus of entrepreneurial startup activity,\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"color: #121212;\"><i>fell by nearly half<\/i><\/b><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0in the thirty-plus years between 1978 and 2011. America&#8217;s average entrepreneur is\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/truth-out.org\/opinion\/item\/23681-did-reagan-kill-entrepreneurialism\" target=\"_blank\">26 years old<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">, but most of our 26-year-olds are burdened by student loan debt.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><b style=\"color: #121212;\">Meriting Our Respect and Appreciation<\/b><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">Lower-income Americans serve our food, care for our sick, and clean up after us, with minimal benefits and few complaints. More and more middle-income workers are falling into this struggling group, as 9 out of 10 of the fastest-growing\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005588;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/most-new-jobs.htm\" target=\"_blank\">occupations<\/a><span style=\"color: #121212;\">\u00a0are considered low-wage, generally not requiring a college degree.<\/span><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><br style=\"color: #121212;\" \/><span style=\"color: #121212;\">These people merit our admiration for persevering in a society where a privileged few are taking almost everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #121212;\">Paul Buchheit is a college teacher, an active member of US Uncut Chicago, founder and developer of social justice and educational websites (UsAgainstGreed.org, PayUpNow.org, RappingHistory.org), and the editor and main author of &#8220;<\/span>American Wars: Illusions and Realities<span style=\"color: #121212;\">&#8221; (Clarity Press).
