{"id":115712,"date":"2014-05-01T17:56:57","date_gmt":"2014-05-01T17:56:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=115712"},"modified":"2014-05-01T17:56:57","modified_gmt":"2014-05-01T17:56:57","slug":"senator-blasts-tsa-fast-food-joints-better-employee-background-checks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/senator-blasts-tsa-fast-food-joints-better-employee-background-checks\/","title":{"rendered":"Senator Blasts TSA: Fast Food Joints Do Better Employee Background Checks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Steve Watson\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The TSA has an annual budget of over SEVEN BILLION DOLLARS, yet this is not enough to do proper background checks on it\u2019s employees, according to agency head John Pistole.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Appearing before the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.commerce.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm?p=PressReleases&amp;ContentRecord_id=1af998fd-56eb-44c1-8371-3a16eb0cc8b0\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation<\/a>\u00a0this week, Pistole faced a grilling from Senators over the Administration\u2019s dodgy employee track record, and its ability to keep Americans safe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDHS (Department of Homeland Security) officials have told us that job applicants in the fast-food industry typically undergo a more robust background check than applicants for a TWIC card,\u201d said Senator Mark Warner, referring to the TSA-issued Transportation Worker Identity Credential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Warner, a Virginia Democrat,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/wavy.com\/2014\/03\/27\/navy-sources-identify-mahan-shooting-suspect\/\" target=\"_blank\">cited a case<\/a>\u00a0involving a truck driver who used his TWIC to gain entry into a Naval Station in Norfolk, Virginia last month where he shot a Navy security officer dead. The shooter, Jeffrey T. Savage, has a violent criminal history, including a previous manslaughter conviction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Astoundingly, he was able to clear the TSA\u2019s screening process. Once a person is initially cleared, the system is only updated if cleared personnel self-report any additional criminal incidents, something violent criminals tend not to do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">U.S. Senator John Thune (R-SD), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee followed up the line of questioning:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"zdqziYzmMXI\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Thune TSA Oversight Hearing Statement\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zdqziYzmMXI?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>At yesterday\u2019s hearing, another Senator, California Democrat Barbara Boxer, referred to the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2616472\/Hawaii-Teen-stowaways-dad-arrives-Honolulu.html\" target=\"_blank\">recent case<\/a>\u00a0where a teenager was able to jump fences at San Jose International airport, and gain access to a passenger jet, where he stowed away in a wheel well and remarkably survived a five hour flight to Honolulu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a 15-year-old can do this, who else can do this? What if it was someone else with an explosive that got on that plane?\u201d Boxer said.<\/p>\n<p>Displaying a remarkable lack of responsibility, TSA head Pistole replied \u201cWe could require airports to do much, much more, but the question is who pays for that?\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"d26gjGh-ZXs\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Senator Boxer Presses TSA Administrator on Security Breach at San Jose International Airport\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d26gjGh-ZXs?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">One solution, perhaps, would be to stop wasting BILLIONS OF DOLLARS on useless security theatre naked body scanners. A new Government Accountability Office\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/assets\/670\/662146.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>\u00a0notes that almost half of all airports with the machines, reported no checkpoint drill results at all from March 2011 through February 2013.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The TSA did not gather mandatory \u201cdata on drills using improvised explosive devices,\u201d or homemade bombs, at the checkpoint that could demonstrate how well screeners are addressing abnormal activity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">TSA officials told the GAO that the reason for this total failure was because it doesn\u2019t know which office within the agency is responsible for overseeing it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The report also found that the TSA is also not bothering to asses the number of pat-downs that are being carried out when a scanner is set off. This means there are no accurate figures on the number of false alarms that occur in the field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Essentially, no one has any idea how well the scanners work because no one bothered to test or asses them, even though it is a legal requirement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSince TSA has failed to analyze and utilize AIT false alarm rates, we have no idea how many passengers are being subjected to pat-downs due to technological failures,\u201d House Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson, D-Miss., said. \u201cTSA should not spend a single dollar on additional AIT machines until all of the deficiencies identified in this report are resolved.\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">As we have previously highlighted, TSA body scanners\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.infowars.com\/video-shows-man-proving-tsa-body-scanners-are-useless\/\">can be fooled by sewing a metallic object into the side of one\u2019s clothing<\/a>, rendering the entire fleet of machines virtually useless.\u00a0This has not stopped the agency from earmarking $3.5 BILLION on the scanners so far.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">A 2011\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oig.dhs.gov\/assets\/Mgmt\/OIG_SLR_12-06_Nov11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Homeland Security report\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0noted that federal investigators \u201cidentified vulnerabilities in the screening process\u201d involving the scanners, while\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thepeterboroughexaminer.com\/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2250625&amp;archive=true\" target=\"_blank\">multiple<\/a>\u00a0other\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.israelnationalnews.com\/News\/News.aspx\/137184#.T6p-8-g7VEM\" target=\"_blank\">security experts<\/a>\u00a0have\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-1240193\/Body-scanner-wouldnt-foiled-syringe-bomber-says-MP-worked-new-machines.html\" target=\"_blank\">gone on record<\/a>\u00a0saying that the scanners are ineffective.\u00a0It is no coincidence that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=6&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CFUQFjAF&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.usatoday.com%2Fstory%2Ftravel%2Fflights%2F2012%2F11%2F15%2Ftsa-bodyscanners%2F1706811%2F&amp;ei=pMYxU8W3NeKc0AXsrIEQ&amp;usg=AFQjCNEjeap2gAOooNhzNRwBC6e8n7_16g&amp;bvm=bv.63587204,d.d2k\" target=\"_blank\">$200 million worth of the machines have now been mothballed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The recent debacle over\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2013\/03\/tsas-50m-uniforms-contract-stirs-ire-on-hill-88530.html\" target=\"_blank\">$50 million uniform contracts<\/a>\u00a0also further exposed\u00a0the TSA as a colossal waste of money.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Then there was the ONE BILLION DOLLARS that was spent on a kooky behavioural monitoring program which consisted of blue shirted bozos staring at travellers in security lines, checking for shifty facial expressions. \u00a0The\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/usa\/tsa-behavior-profiling-program-685\/\">GAO concluded<\/a>\u00a0that the program was\u00a0<i>\u201cno better than chance\u201d<\/i>\u00a0at discovering would be wrong-doers, and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prisonplanet.com\/experts-confirm-tsa-wasted-a-billion-dollars-on-kooky-behaviour-monitoring.html\">behavioural science experts described<\/a>\u00a0the notion that nefarious intent can be determined from body language as \u201clittle more than a cultural fiction.\u201d ONE BILLION DOLLARS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Perhaps diverting funds away from such utterly useless and invasive technology and practices, and putting it into checking whether employees are violent criminals would be a good idea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Or better yet, just scrap the incompetent and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prisonplanet.com\/government-report-tsa-corruption-misconduct-soaring.html\" target=\"_blank\">corrupt<\/a>\u00a0TSA and employ private security companies who do better background checks than burger joints, and who do not eat up $7 BILLION in taxpayer funds with nothing to show for it but an army of jack boot thugs and a warehouse of mothballed porno scanners failing to secure anyone from anything.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013-<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>Steve Watson\u00a0<\/strong>is a London based writer and editor for Alex Jones\u2019\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/infowars.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Infowars.com<\/a>, and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/prisonplanet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prisonplanet.com<\/a>.
